Morning. I think the fires are out. Hopefully just smoke now. It took ten fire engines and local farmers until 2am and it covered a mile. It’s really sad as it’s ground nesting time for a lot of moorland birds, plus there are young deer and lambs. People are shit. Last year was the only year we didn’t get fires - because the first lockdown was strict. They’re saying it was definitely deliberate.

Summer's going to be hell then. No words for people who willingly destroy our beautiful flora & fauna. Well I do but I try not to swear on this thread . I live near the Peak District and (except last year) we love to go for a leisurely drive. There's some stunning countryside near to Alton Towers too. Looking forward to it, and eating outdoors at independent restaurants/cafes/cake trailers .

The source was a 100 shot firework let off in the middle of nowhere. Unfortunately it’s set off again this afternoon- once peat is smouldering it can retain its heat and restart. Unfortunately the fire crews had to come off the moor at 8pm for health and safety reasons (or cutbacks in fire crews), which is a worry as they worked all night in previous fires. Local farmers and national Trust staff did the night shift.

Met a ranger once, explained about how the peat can burn underground for days and spread out from the original source

He also explained about the time he met a bunch of guys with a bbq that he asked be put out... they kept offering him steak snd beer whilst claiming not to speak English well enough to understand him


I walked round the roaches in Staffordshire a couple of years ago , after a big fire there . The outer surface of the crag was destroyed, it was heartbreaking

The motives of someone who would purposefully set fire to moorland or woodland are completely incomprehensible.

Leaving litter or maybe even a BBQ which isn't put out properly you could at least say was careless but doing something on purpose which you know will cause that devastation. You can't imagine what goes on in their heads .

I guess we need to hope for some rain .

It’s actually gone grey and is forecast a fair bit of rain tomorrow afternoon, so fingers crossed. I’ve just read something online that said they’d caught the person that let the fireworks off, but it was an accident (??). He got a £160 fine.
