Mischievous. Moonpig ad on radio says mischieevios.

It's one of those words where 2 different pronunciations are in common use

Miss-che-vus
Miss-chee-vee-us

I wouldn't say that either is wrong

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 24/04/2021 09:22

It’s miss- chee- vus. Otherwise there would be an ‘I’ after the ‘v’.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 24/04/2021 09:23

‘i’

WeatherwaxOn · 24/04/2021 09:25

I was brought up hearing "mis-chee-vee-oss" but when I learned to read I discovered it was "mis-chee-voss".

Will0wtree · 24/04/2021 09:39

I say mis chee vee us. (Brought up in SE London).

But looking on line seems to unanimously say that the right way to pronounce it is Mis che vus. So I accept I'm wrong.

I think the ie in it is misleading, as most ie words create an ee sound (achieve, niece, chief, priest, brief, grief) however, having said that, I'm not sure why I'm putting an extra syllable in....maybe habit just assuming it's vious, rather than vous, as there are so many vious ending words.

Miss chee vee us, doesn't even make sense. It's just ignorance. It's miss chee vuss

notagainmummy · 24/04/2021 09:56

FFS. My bloody autocorrect. It's pronounced Miss che vous!
