Reaching the epitome of middle ages

Accidentally ordered giant apple catcher pants from m&s (probably due to needing new glasses).

My gods, they are a new level of comfort. They don't fall down and are an absolute joy to wander around in. And at harvest time I will be very popular.

Am I now going to start buying clothes from the back of the daily mail?

Is this the beginning of buying for comfort rather than fashion?

Send me your recommendations for the slide into glorious middle age, where elasticated waistbands are an integral part of my wardrobe. Grin

Not when you wear leggings and a nice long top or dress or cardi Wink

WouldBeGood · 25/04/2021 10:50

Yeah.. I do tend to, but also need to wear gym leggings, god help me, to get back to the gym and can’t guarantee no giant arse on view, so better without VPL to boot 😱

Northernsoullover · 25/04/2021 11:04

@WouldBeGood

Do the Big Pants not give VPL??
I've got some from m and s with lace on the legs that don't.
CarmelBeach · 25/04/2021 11:08

@theheartofthematter

Oddballs pants are the comfiest pants ever. I highly recommend. They catch and keep all the 'apples' comfy
What is an apple?!

I did an hour gardening yesterday and I have aches and pains. That makes me sadder than big knickers or comfy shoes!

You can buy 'no VPL' briefs from M&S and Sainsbury's.

Full briefs - Yup

Comfy shoes that accomodate my fat feet and orthotics - Yup

T-shirts worn as vests under 'office casual' tops - Yup

All you have to watch out for is beige.

Beware of beige - I have three pairs of beige trousers, two beige tops, a beige t-shirt, a beige jacket and a pair of beige shoes.

My only consolation is, that I haven't got any elasticated waists.....

@HeadNorth

Oh yes, noticing nature and the changing seasons is all part of this lovely ‘era’
Went for a big walk with my slightly younger friend last week,and we were pointing out trees, plants and birds to each other... my DDad would have been 96 and her DDad is 81 and we were saying how nice it is that we remember them teaching us nature stuff so many ~ 50+ ~ years ago!
Such a lovely day out - I enjoyed it far more than shopping!! Can’t be arsed with clothes shopping anymore... (it’s catalogues all the way now😉 I’m a Cotton Traders Gold customer!)

FourTurnings · 25/04/2021 11:52

I seem to have slightly more facial hair than I used to 😕 which I don’t love.

FourTurnings · 25/04/2021 11:54

Noticing nature, yes, and thinking about parking availability in advance.

FindingMeno · 25/04/2021 11:56

Instead of getting excited about doing a bungee jump, I get an adrenaline-rush when I have to jog to get on the train before the doors close.

WaltzingToWalsingham · 25/04/2021 12:17

This is a fantastic thread!

I like nothing better than pottering round the garden centre in a cosy cardigan. Well, nothing better apart from listening to Radio 4 and enjoying a Wethers Original.

I am giving serious consideration to purchasing a neck cord for my glasses, a Teasmade and a shopping trolley.

Haven't quite got to People's Friend yet though!

CarmelBeach · 25/04/2021 12:49

Does anyone feel they could kill a couple of hours just sitting and pondering nothing in particular? or looking at the garden?

Wabe · 25/04/2021 18:33

On the shopping trolley point, my chic-est Parisian friend has had one since she was in her early 30s. It’s the classic old lady tartan, and she takes it around the market, filling it with interesting cheeses while wearing ballet flats, a trench coat and severe glasses, and the general effect is functional chic, rather than bag lady.

Reclaim the trolley!

MorriseysGladioli · 25/04/2021 22:08

I've got a friend in her 30s who has a wicker trolley with a walking stick type handle.

She has woven flowers and things through the wicker and it looks lovely.

I feel like a wise old sage when I feel the Spring Quickening, as I call it. That sudden, certain feeling that, to quote Genesis, (Undertow) Spring must strike again against the shield of Winter. You sense it. Sometimes as early as late March, certainly early April.

And, of course, you also sense the dying of the old year, in Autumn. A given day, you're out in the garden, and you feel that change. You know the year is turning.

But, in the same way you welcome in the new, in Spring, you prepare for the winter, in Autumn.

SynchroSwimmer · 26/04/2021 00:22

Don’t forget a side order of glucosamine and cod liver oil supplements...
