What car seat set-up do you have for your 140cm child, please?

Not helpful but I’m only a bit taller, I’m now thinking I need one.

If you are below 150cm it is safer to have one.

Op high back booster.

So that’s me in a car seat then Blush

I did see a whiplash specialist doctor who explained smaller people do suffer more as the seats just aren’t designed for them

Yep, since researching car seats my mum now has a car seat, just a booster seat-people took the piss to begin with but she remembers people taking the piss when people started wearing seat belts but now the majority wear them.

There’s a whole section in Invisible Women on this - car seats and crash testing are all based on a 177cm person, making them significantly less safe for anyone much shorter.

None.

Booster seat for mine , she is about 142cm.

amarya · 23/04/2021 19:29

Regulus... I'm less than 150cm. No car seat but I buy my cars based on best driving position I can find. Couldn't drive when heavily pregnant as no room for my belly!

EvilOnion · 23/04/2021 19:30

Cybex M-Fix.

MrsAmaretto · 23/04/2021 19:32

Maxi Cosi Rodifix is what my eldest was in until 148cm.

PlumpAndDeliciousFatcat · 23/04/2021 19:33

Thanks all, this is helpful. She is 7 so comparisons with her peers aren’t much use.

A DC a of that height does not need and should not be in a car seat.

You’re right they don’t (legally) need one but should not be?? Are you saying it’s actually dangerous for a person over 140cm to be in a car seat?!
redcandlelight · 23/04/2021 19:38

my dc were in a maxi cosi rodi hbb which is quite wide at the shoulders.
we are in europe where carseats are mandatory until 150cm or 12years.

sanityisamyth · 23/04/2021 19:39

My DS is 140cm. He's in a high back booster.

redcandlelight · 23/04/2021 19:41

a child should be in a carseat until the belt fits properly over the collar bone/shoulder (not near the throat) and over the pelvis (not over the soft tummy).
until the child is big enough to use the car seatbelts safely they need a car seat.

Imissthegym · 23/04/2021 19:44

140cm 7 year old here too. Maxicosi Rodi is what we have.

EvilOnion · 23/04/2021 19:45

@SpringTides5 that's not true.

There are a few factors that help determine when it's safe to ditch the booster.

From the Britax website;
"We recommend that you only consider moving your child out of their booster seat once they have passed the ‘5 Step Test’. Here is what to look for:

  1. Can your child sit with their back against the vehicle seat?
  2. Do your child's knees bend in front of the edge of the seat cushion?
  3. Is the lap belt sitting low across your child's hips and touching their thighs?
  4. Does the sash belt sit across the middle of your child's shoulder?
  5. Can your child stay seated correctly like this for the entire trip without slumping?"
EvilOnion · 23/04/2021 19:46

My 8yo is just under 140cm and definitely not ready to be without a seat.

DancesWithDaffodils · 23/04/2021 19:54

My 140cm just about to be 10 year old is in a high backed booster.
My 150cm 11 year old has been carseat less for about a year in DH's car, but has only just got rid of a booster cushion in my car as he now meets the 5 point test above.

At 7, I would have them in a seat. Their pelvis isnt developed enough to withstand a crash unless the seatbelt is positioned over their hip and not their stomach.

CornishTiger · 23/04/2021 19:56

@Regulus what can seat does your mum use?

BogRollBOGOF · 23/04/2021 23:51

DS (10) is just over 135cm but has a long back and recently outgrew his HBB. We tried just using a booster, but we found that it was encouraging him to sit badly in odd positions (he has dyspraxia and naturally sits in all manner of postitions) and was therefore better without a car seat. The seat belts in our cars sit across him well.

At 157cm it's just a fact of life that seat belts are often uncomfortable and do things like rub the moles on my neck. I also had to stop driving in pregnancy because I could no longer reach the pedals and fit behind the steering wheel. The idea of a driver's airbag going off so close to a baby bump was pretty scary. Airbags are not well designed for short women in the first place as there isn't the space for maximum inflation before impact to work effectively and minimise injury.

JS87 · 24/04/2021 11:38

I wanted to keep DS (nearly 10) in hbb to 150cm. He’s 146 but I weighted him today and he’s 37.5kg. His seat says up to 36kg so I assume he needs to stop using it??

SpringTides5 · 24/04/2021 12:18

@JS87

A 10 year old doesn’t need to be in a car seat ffs. It’s totally inappropriate and could be dangerous if he’s using a car seat that he is too heavy for.
