So, does surstromming smell as bad as people make out?

Not that I would ever eat it, or hopefully ever be in the vicinity of smelling it.

I am seeing viral videos of people attempting to eat it and most of it consists of them gagging their way as soon as the can is open

So...does it really smell as bad as people are making it out to be?

This is the video I watched. Be warned if you are sensitive to the sound of people gagging

I think QI had an episode where they mentioned that it's best to open the can under water.

Some airlines have banned it from being carried on their aircraft.

I think if you have to open a food underwater...it’s not edible Grin

Wonder which would be worse. This or durian fruit

I don't think durian is too bad... although I've never cut open a fresh one. The smell when it is in its shell is kind of like a mix of fruit that is starting to turn mixed with garlic. It tastes like delicious fruit that has been left in the freezer next to a bag of chopped onions.

It is a powerful, pervasive smell though. I bought a bag of cookies with durian puree inside. Each one was individually wrapped in a sealed foil wrapper in a resealable foil bag. After I opened the packet to take some out to take to a picnic, the room smelled of durian for weeks, even though the cookies were still individually sealed in the resealed bag and I didn't open any of the cookies in the house.

Jamie Oliver did a feature on this. Its on YouTube. He said it stank but was delicious.

See I don’t see how something that smells stomach turning can actually taste good as surely the smell and taste as strongly linked

Fermented herring? You couldn’t pay me to eat. It doesn’t even sound palatable, let alone the smell.

Eyesofdisarray · 23/04/2021 16:14

Yes according to DS. As soon as it was opened, his friend ran to the bathroom to vomit. DS didn't try it but we have a photo of the can
🤢

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 23/04/2021 16:16

Probably worse!

I've eaten some cheeses that smell like manure, but taste really good. I had to not breathe in while I was eating it.

Couldn't face fermented fish though.

Soubriquet · 23/04/2021 16:42

I hate smelling strong smelling cheese and that’s things like Brie or that stuff that comes in little boxes. I would be stuffed with something like stinking bishop
