Breakdown cover - AA or another?

Wondering if anyone has experience of different breakdown cover providers - any experiences welcome!

Just had my AA cover renew for a whopping amount. Having looked around it seems the renewal charge is hugely inflated and actually we can get breakdown cover for much less. The AA have now offered us a 'deal' meaning we'll only pay half of that, but it's still more than others.

'Which?' sings the praises of Start Rescue, which looks good and is a third of the cost of even the revised quote from AA but there's a part of me wondering if we'll miss the service provided by AA - they've always been quick and helpful.

Does anyone know if it's worth sticking with AA despite the cost or worth trying another?

I had renewal with AA last month. Went up 3 fold!!! Went on comparison site and found exact same level of cover with RAC. Told AA unless they matched, i was leaving for RAC. They matched and my premium only went up 48p. My car is only 2 yrs, not sure if that makes a difference. I now pay £14.28 for everything, home start, roadside etc.

Previously, yrs ago, used Green Flag and was not happy. Not heard of Start Rescue but if Which recommended should be ok? Just check you have the level of cover you need and go back to AA and ask them to match?

I've used asda breakdown for years. I used to use it A LOT as I had a dodgy car. They use local breakdown services I think but always came quickly. I go through topcashback.

Also the price has only risen by £3 in years.

We use GEM - it's small local independents, basically. Service was quick and good the two times (so far) we've had to call them out. Always does well in Autocar surveys and isn't bad value for a family membership.

We have family AA , every year they quote a ridiculous amount so we see what RAC would charge and then get them to match or as near as . I stay with them because they have always been fairly prompt to arrive and when I needed towing home from Kidderminster to Kent a few years back they couldn’t have been more helpful.

We use Green Flag. The only time I've used them they were with me within 20 minutes and were very cheerful and helpful.

I have start rescue and they actually give a loyalty discount without having to be asked. £36 last year for rescue, homestart and uk wide recovery, ten year old car. Didn't call them but have had a couple of low loader rides with the previous car. Quick response and very helpful.

we have ours tagged in with the insurance, last year the AA were the best this year RAC as they do a deal for a new insurance policy + breakdown

I have found startrescue very good, much cheaper than AA/RAC. And they offer NHS discount if that's something you can use.

I cancelled mine with AA when the renewal came through in January and it had been increased by about 30% from last year. I hardly drove my car last year! I put less than 2000 miles on the clock.

I rang them to cancel and they tried to offer me a reduced cost but I was annoyed with them for trying it on and told them so. I actually didn't replace the cover for 3 months as I wasn't really driving during lockdown anyway. When my insurance came up for renewal this month I got a great deal with RAC insurance which included breakdown cover. Well chuffed!

Thanks everyone! Sounds like it might be worth trying to haggle AA down a bit more, but trying Start Rescue if that doesn't work. Am a bit annoyed with AA tbh as it feels like such a con - they obviously hope you just don't notice them upping the premium so much.
