Genuinely can’t believe and completely shocked by the news today of Royal Mail! Just watched the panorama episode and a mother, who had children, and was also pregnant at the time got handcuffed and took to prison, whilst the Royal Mail just watched, knowing....knowing she was innocent!! That takes a monster!

Do you think money and government power should not be enough to stop those who done this, to be sentenced and sent to prison?!

I will never spend another penny on the Royal Mail- I can not believe what they have done! So horrific! People have even taken their own lives because they couldn’t cope with it!

I’m so shocked!!

I'm agog that they had the arrogance to destroy respectable employees lives because they couldn't possibly be wrong.
The supposed criminals weren't some organised crime gang, it's a massive reach to imagine all these formerly law abiding people went rogue the alarms should have been deafening.

Magnificentmug12 · 23/04/2021 12:24

Exactly!! I bet the alarms were deafening but they thought if they blame the staff they will get so scared and foot the bill themselves. Some of them did!

This is going to cost the tax paper £300 million! It’s disgusting! I hope they all go to prison! They deserve it!

It's worth listening to The Great Post Office Scandal series on BBC Sounds - goes into much more detail on how low the PO were prepared to go rather than hold their hands up. They still haven't admitted any liability and I very much doubt anyone will be brought to book for this appalling misuse of power.

MichelleScarn · 23/04/2021 12:28

Have just heard this on the radio, its appalling and I hope they are going to do more than the 'whoops we're sorry' attitude coming across.

Musicaltheatremum · 23/04/2021 12:29

It was an appalling bit of software on the computer system they used. Huge instruction book and very clunky to operate. Took ages to find how to do things. My partner ran a PO for a while and hated it.

ThomasHardyPerennial · 23/04/2021 12:30

I thought the Post Office and Royal Mail were two separate companies. The current scandal concerns the Post Office, doesn't it?

Toddlerteaplease · 23/04/2021 12:30

Unfortunately you will find it difficult not to spend another penny on Royal Mail. Unless you never post a letter with a stamp on it ever again.

Arbadacarba · 23/04/2021 12:31

It astounds me that people of previous good character, with no evidence of the "stolen" money ever having been in their possession, could be convicted of theft. It more than astounds me, it terrifies me.

marriednotdead · 23/04/2021 12:33

I used to work in a main branch for the Post Office- NOT the same company as Royal Mail by the way!- and at the time we were shocked that there were supposedly so many subpostmasters that were crooked.
Now we know and although they will never be able to fully redress the wrongs and consequences, I'm so pleased that they have been vindicated .

AntiHop · 23/04/2021 12:36

Post office not royal mail.

I had never heard about this until I watched panorama last year. It is appaling how the post office behaved, and how people's lives were destroyed for no reason.

Pasteque · 23/04/2021 12:37

Aren't royal mail and the post office completely separate companies? But yes what happened was disgusting, those poor people.

Veterinari · 23/04/2021 12:40

It's nothing to do with Royal mail Confused It's the post office at fault
HarmonicAnalysis · 23/04/2021 12:42

Horrendous. Sad Just watched the video of the poor woman whose husband didn't live to see his name cleared - heartbreaking. www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-56859357

The impact it had on their lives. Sad Sad There's no way to undo that.

murbblurb · 23/04/2021 12:44

This has been ongoing for some years - there have been suicides. Private eye have been reporting throughout and the whole thing is beyond shameful. Management 'not my fault' taken to extremes.

emilyfrost · 23/04/2021 12:44

Get your facts straight, OP. It’s got absolutely nothing to do with Royal Mail.

Don’t slander them based on your own ignorance.

HarmonicAnalysis · 23/04/2021 12:47

Yes, the fact it has taken this long to clear them is an outrage in itself. The Post Office need to be held properly accountable for what they've done here.

Xenia · 23/04/2021 12:48

I have followed this case right from the early days when it was in Computer Weekly and then in the Financial Times. It has been very hard on the victims.

Then initial civil compensation which took years for them to get was nothing like enough either.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 23/04/2021 12:52

Untrue. Horizon (the inaccurate accounting system) was rolled out in 1999, and there were immediate problems. The Royal Mail wasn't split off from the Post Office till 2012. Maybe get your own facts straight?
Magnificentmug12 · 23/04/2021 12:55

Yes post office!! Not Royal Mail- got my wires crossed in the blind rage I put myself in! 🤦🏽‍♀️ The pregnant women going to prison really upset me and I wasn’t thinking straight when I created the thread.

I’ve never heard about any of it before today, shocked it’s been going on for a long time.

OP posts:
ComDummings · 23/04/2021 12:56

It’s horrendous, all those innocent people absolutely destroyed by this.

Magnificentmug12 · 23/04/2021 12:56

Actually I will stick with misslucys story, it works better for me 😂

Thank you!

Grin

It just proves that good employers don't exist now.
Everything is capitalist, cut throat, corporate and staff are just collateral.
Even traditional institutions like PO.

Clymene · 23/04/2021 13:13

You've got that the wrong way round @MissLucyEyelesbarrow
Royal Mail separated from the Post Office in 2012. Before that they were part of the Post Office.

This is on the Post Office, not RM.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 23/04/2021 13:19

The total lack of common sense bothers me. Why didn't anybody in the PO, the police, the Crown Prosecution Service and the judiciary at any point say 'Hang on a minute ...'? They were being asked over and over again to arrest and prosecute people with no criminal records. Were there no reports highlighting that the level of supposed fraud had rocketed after the new accounting system came in?

I remember reading about this in Private Eye at least a decade ago. How on earth has it been allowed to drag on as long as this?

LizzieMacQueen · 23/04/2021 13:21

They were each told they were the only ones affected. It's a shocking thing to have happened.

Second the post above to listen to the Radio 4 series on it. You can find it on BBC Sounds.
