If you could speak another language fluently

What would it be?

I think I would choose Spanish. It sounds so musical to me

I speak English fluently, Spanish and French conversationally, and I have the necessary vocabulary to survive on a Greek farm but nowhere else (I can ask you where the goats went at sunrise, but I can't order in a restaurant Grin )

If it were simply for the sound and the pleasure, Japanese, Swahili, or Hebrew.

If it were for functional reasons, Arabic or Mandarin.

LizzieMacQueen · 22/04/2021 17:30

Hebrew for me.

MyGorramShip · 22/04/2021 17:32

Russian. I piss about on DuoLingo with it a lot and miss hearing my Grandad speak in it (I was 12 when he died) and didn’t spent enough time with him to pick any of it up myself.

chloworm · 22/04/2021 17:32

Dutch for sure. Love the language.

JorisBonson · 22/04/2021 17:34

Realistically, French. Ex DH was French and I was getting pretty good because he'd speak French to me a lot, but I've lost it since I haven't seen him for 10 years 😂

I would love to learn Japanese or Russian but don't have the patience.

Kenneldogsrock · 22/04/2021 17:35

Japanese. It would make getting around so much easier (when we can travel again)!

Eyevorbig0ne · 22/04/2021 17:36

Arabic.

Ninkanink · 22/04/2021 17:37

Oh yes Arabic would be very interesting too!

Blabla81 · 22/04/2021 17:41

Turkish. My dad is from Cyprus and most of my extended family speak it. For some reason I never retained it from my childhood despite being brought up surrounded by it.
We go to Cyprus every now and again and I wish I could speak Turkish - I clearly look Turkish (half English on my mums side) and everyone there addresses me in Turkish. It’s embarrassing when I’m like “er sorry me English” 😂

Magpiecomplex · 22/04/2021 17:43

It's probably not in the spirit of the thread to say Klingon, is it? Grin

Ninkanink · 22/04/2021 17:46
Grin

Turkish is another interesting one.

Or Mongolian.

So many!

Chaotica · 22/04/2021 17:57

Welsh! I'm learning but am yet to try it out. (I speak several other languages well and it is just so different.) I seem to look like I should speak (am part Welsh) it as whenever I'm there, I'm often addressed in Welsh not English.

I need to get good enough to say in Welsh: 'I'm sorry - I'm rubbish in Welsh but please can we carry using it as I need the practice.' Welsh-speaking MN - would you tolerate learners? Or do you think 'FGS - just use English instead!'?

And Mongolian, as it sounds great and has a cool alphabet.

Cushionsnotpillows · 22/04/2021 17:57

Italian as it is lovely to hear - I always wonder on holiday if these incredibly passionate, romantic sounding conversations I hear on the street are just people asking their other halves to put the bin out or pick up some bread on their way home. Grin

BrownEyedGirl80 · 22/04/2021 17:57

Spanish all day long.Im gutted I dosnt do it at school.

BrownEyedGirl80 · 22/04/2021 17:57

didn't

Afromeg · 22/04/2021 18:01

I also know a bit of Twi and Hebrew but on a more basic level than the others. I need to focus on one at a time - that's my problem. Forgot to mention Yoruba as one of the ones I know but really want to be fluent in above all else. Probably followed by Italian.

My dad was fluent in Mandarin but only managed to teach us a few words and phrases.

DC, thanks to their friendship group and wanting to speak to each other in different languages besides English, are fluent in Japanese, Igbo, Russian and Mandarin. They're not keen on teaching me, for obvious reasons, but I'll show them!Grin

PandoraP · 22/04/2021 18:08

Italian

roguetomato · 22/04/2021 18:14

Definitely Scottish Gaelic. Sounds beautiful.

Kljnmw3459 · 22/04/2021 18:17

I'd love to speak French fluently. I'm nearly there but i think I'd have to live in France to get to that fully fluent level.

LibbyL92 · 22/04/2021 18:22

Spanish 100%

CheerfulBunny · 22/04/2021 18:36

I'm fulfilling a lifetime's ambition to learn Italian using Duolingo . Making slow but steady progress and really enjoying it. I'm ok with learning vocab but the grammar is harder to grasp. I can now watch Inspector Montalbano and get a thrill from picking out odd words and phrases!

Sn0tnose · 22/04/2021 18:39

Welsh. I can speak more than DH (South Wales, didn’t go to a Welsh language school and paid zero attention in Welsh lessons) but his pronunciation is always spot on and mine is shocking.

newnortherner111 · 22/04/2021 19:18

If I were to learn another language it would be Spanish. Being able to speak the local language and especially to understand it when in the country makes any visit much more enjoyable.

badlydrawnbear · 22/04/2021 19:18

Romanian. It would be useful for work and would remind me of the best summer of my life when I spent 6 weeks there.

EscapeDragon · 22/04/2021 19:22

My distant ancestors were from Germany so I'd like to be able to speak that fluently.

I also wish I'd been taught Latin at school.
