What would it be?

I think I would choose Spanish. It sounds so musical to me

OP posts:

Urdu to help me with work

purrswhileheeats · 22/04/2021 15:28

I'd love to speak Russian too, would be very useful where I live (not Russia Grin) Studied French and Spanish to A level and my Greek is reasonable; if you're going to learn a new language OP I'd definitely recommend something challenging with a different alphabet!

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 22/04/2021 15:50

Can I please have all of them? Please!!!

I can get by in a number of languages, but if I could have my wish: Russian, Mandarin and Hungarian

EileenGC · 22/04/2021 16:02

Oh Hungarian! That and Finnish are just so hard, aren’t they. I have half-Hungarian cousins and when they set off speaking with their mum, there isn’t anything I can do to understand a word. They’ve taught me countless words and I still can’t get anything.

TheDrsDocMartens · 22/04/2021 16:04

Russian or Arabic.

FreezerBird · 22/04/2021 16:08

Welsh. It would massively expand my employment opportunities where I live. I'm learning but I can't imagine ever being competent enough to use it in a work setting.

JadeSeahorse · 22/04/2021 16:09

I speak French reasonably but am currently studying Japanese which I am loving.

EBearhug · 22/04/2021 16:20

Going by today's meeting - English.

I have done French, German and Spanish in the past, and am currently learning Welsh, so any of those.

Untradwife · 22/04/2021 16:50

I'm fluent in Irish and understand Scots Gaelic. I'm also fluent in French and can get by in Spanish and Italian. I'd love to be fluent in Welsh and Cornish

IdblowJonSnow · 22/04/2021 16:55

Italian. Beautiful and dramatic.i also think it's fairly easy to understand as I can speak spanish a little and they are similar.

Pasteque · 22/04/2021 16:57

French, I've been learning for a while now but it's getting harder now we're moving past GCSE level! I can, read, write and speak ok but I've not a clue what they're on about when they start speaking 😄I've been watching spiral and miraculous ladybug to try and get used to it but I'm not sure it's really helping. I wish someone could just put that knowledge in my head for me😄

Thatisnotwhatisaid · 22/04/2021 16:58

Swedish. I’m teaching myself at the minute.

minou123 · 22/04/2021 16:59

I'm fluent in 4 ^^

Bit I'd love to learn Dothraki.

ImTheWolfToday · 22/04/2021 17:01

Another one for Icelandic here. I’ve dabbled with learning it in the past and know a fair few words, but am in no way conversational! It’s so hard, would be such an achievement to crack it!

Afromeg · 22/04/2021 17:05

Hard to choose but I'll start with Yoruba.

I love languages and try to learn every chance I get - usually taught by some family members, friends and former co-workers. I seem to start but never finish so I know the basics of a few languages (Hausa, Italian, Portugese, Spanish and French) and fluent in 2 others.

newtb · 22/04/2021 17:06

Hindustani for me. My late df spoke it fluently as well as French, German and possibly Cantonese.
My late DM spoke French, German, Spanish and Danish.

Me? Just French a smattering of hindi, several German phrases, a few words of Welsh and that's it. Currently learning sexting in French which is great fun and good for my self-esteem 😁

MildredPuppy · 22/04/2021 17:10

I like the way russian sounds but i think arabic because my grandpa spoke it to me a lot of the time. I never took the time to listen and pick it up.

I basically pick up vocab very quickly but get stuck on the gender thing and never progress

RickJames · 22/04/2021 17:10

Today I managed to have a long conversation about waste building materials and order a skip to be delivered in German. I'm still on a high!

I'm not talented at learning languages. I love Russian, it's so guttural yet musical to me. My BF is Russian but there's no point learning. I have to stick to the ones I need (German/ Dutch) even if they arent very glamorous.

99victoria · 22/04/2021 17:11

Greek. I've been teaching myself for about 4 years and can get by when we do our annual visit to Greece but I'd love to be properly fluent

LilaButterfly · 22/04/2021 17:13

Im fluent in five eu languages! Moved around a lot as a kid/teen.
Ive lived in china for a year once and tried to learn mandarin. It was too hard for me to pronounce and i gave up. I would love to speak it though!

doctorhamster · 22/04/2021 17:15

Welsh. I am Welsh but can't speak the language beyond a couple of sentences I learnt at school.

EileenGC · 22/04/2021 17:15

Well done you @RickJames 🎉
I still remember the first phone call I did in German, where we could both understand each other and not just hung up the phone mid-call in embarrassment. I felt on top of the world. Then I went to the shop and the cashier had to repeat a question three times 😂

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 22/04/2021 17:18

You do not need talent for languages - you need interest, motivation, a bit of time and the willingness to sometimes feel ridiculous.

As far as family languages go - for me it is Frisian, but so far I only took one course.

iklboo · 22/04/2021 17:19

Welsh. It sounds lovely.

NotGenerationAlpha · 22/04/2021 17:29

French and Japanese. I learned both at school and was rubbish at it. I really wish I can be fluent in them.
