Can he see me on zoom?

Morning,

I've just got to work and forgot my glasses so I'm in big sunglasses (or blind) Confused

I work alone so that would be fine but boss has invited me to a zoom with head office, all of the senior management etc.

There are a lot of them. If I just click video off and mic off will he know I'm there? Or if I simply don't attend would he know?

I have only used zoom for the kids schooling stuff!

HELLLLP

Yes. There will be a black square with your name on it. Make sure it's your name, not your kids' name/a joke name... You will also be able to see it.

Also the host has asked people to respond to a "save the date" for licensing purposes.

I don't have a save the date, just the zoom link forwarded by my boss.

Will the host shout at me? Am I gatecrashing? Aaaargh

Ok thanks.

Yes he'll know you're there if he wants to. Those with the camera off and not speaking appear after the ones with the camera off on the zoom window so if there are loads of people he would need to go through the windows to see you.

LaCerbiatta · 22/04/2021 09:39

*appear after the Inês with the camera on!

LaCerbiatta · 22/04/2021 09:39

Ones not Inês!

zoomier · 22/04/2021 09:41

Ok thank you. Am I likely to be confronted by the host? I think there will be lots of people on the zoom but I'm not sure

Do you need to see for this meeting?
Will there be things to read?
If not, and it will just be talking heads, you could not wear any glasses and just listen with your camera on.
Alternatively, start the meeting that way so they see you are there, then switch the camera off. If asked about it, message in chat that the camera is on the blink.

I mean, you know the host so you are the only person who can answer that. They have the capabilities to ask by unmuting themselves and asking, if that’s what you mean.
LordEmsworth · 22/04/2021 09:53

Why would the host confront you?

If they shout at you for getting it wrong, when everyone else can see and hear them, then everyone else will know they are a twat, so I doubt they will shout at you. Where I work, the host would be polite if you made an error and talk you through how to do it in future (and possibly after the call, roll their eyes privately) but I don't know about your workplace.

Either there's a backstory or you're massively overthinking it...

Cocksinsocks · 22/04/2021 09:57

I would just say 'morning guys I am here but I forgot my glasses today and rather than look like a Berk in my prescription sunglasses on screen I'm just going to keep my camera off! Haha'

terrywynne · 22/04/2021 10:04

Do you mean would the host confront you for not having responded to the save the date but being on the meeting? Surely thanks something to ask you manager! It will presumably depend on exactly why the save the date is required and why he is forwarding the link to you. Your manager will be able to look through the participants to see if you are there, even if you turn camera and mic off. The host could in theory remove you from the meeting if you are not supposed to be in it, but then that would be a question of why your manager sent you a link for a meeting you weren't allowed to attend (same as if they took you to an in person meeting you weren't allowed to attend).

This is exactly what you need to do! dont faff about worrying.
zoomier · 22/04/2021 13:02

Ha, I survived.

I don't know the host at all, but they let me in and left me there so it's all good! Hate Zoom.

Thanks though

Can you say Berk at work?!

Insidelaurashead · 22/04/2021 15:00

For future reference/anyone else who doesn't want their camera on, blame your wifi. I have colleagues whose WiFi can't handle a teams meeting if their camera is on, so they have camera off. None of us care, its fine

timeisnotaline · 22/04/2021 15:04

I work across timezones sometimes so I say it’s too early for me guys my camera doesn’t seem to have woken up. Or I say it’s too late for me so they can’t see my 9pm wine
