For family with plenty to do? Good schools, transport links, nice friendly people, good shops?

Bath, Bristol.

What is your budget?

mindutopia · 21/04/2021 13:15

What do you want? Rural, city, market town. Based on what you've said, around Taunton or around Bristol would be good. Bath is very touristy, though villages near Bath are nice. I just would never go into Bath to do anything and wouldn't want it to be my nearest town.

I would strongly recommend that unless you must move now, that you wait. At the moment, everyone is trying to move to this area and house prices are massively inflated. We've been trying to buy since pre-COVID when our house purchase fell through. Everything is selling for a good 10% over guide price or more. I would keep that in mind when you are looking for houses. We haven't come close to having another offer accepted and we've been trying since after first lockdown last year. Everything is selling for a good 30-100K over the guide price. I would wait until prices settle down unless you truly can't put off moving.

Thanks everyone for your messages. We are looking to rent initially to make sure we're in the right area. Budget to buy will be around £350k. Just outside of the main areas is fine but we just don't know what areas to aim for.

Clevedon, Chew Magna, Midsomer Norton, Street , Wells.....

Bristol isn't in Somerset. Its a county in it's own right.

minniemomo · 21/04/2021 15:24

Do you want the coast? Countryside? What transport links do you need. We are close to Bristol on the coast because it's more convenient but the trade off is houses cost a bit more, still can buy within your budget just though. Other areas eg a Somerset are cheaper

My mum lived in Hinton st George. Lovely village with award winning pub, only one shop though 😂

funtimefrank · 21/04/2021 16:20

Wells?

Hi all, we are looking to move from London to Somerset and would like advice on nice villages to look at.
We want somewhere quiet with nice countryside around.
Our sons are grown so not worried about schools.
We would like somewhere with a dog friendly pub and good community where we could get involved in the local community.
Hopefully local people can offer advice.
