Would you rather live next to a pub or a primary school?

I realise there are many who wouldn't consider either but humour me.

My boss is trying to sell her house, which is next to a large pub with a big beer garden. To me, whilst anything will sell at the right price, it's obvious that the pub will be contributing to the fact it's not selling.

This turned into a bit of lighthearted one upmanship because I live next to a school "which must be much worse".

It is true the school can be a nuisance, but it's never affected us much. When DC were small I was taking them to the school by foot, so traffic wasn't a problem and if you're working FT you're not there when the school is a problem. Yes, I'd expect the school to be a factor in any sale, it's one reason we could afford it when we bought, but on a daily basis it's not a problem for us. However, I would be very reluctant to live close to an urban pub and associated night time noise.

Which would you go for if you had to compromise in one or the other? Or both equally bad and we're both just used to what we know?

Primary school much better than a pub! It’s the thought of late night noisy revellers that I can’t stand.

TeachesOfPeaches · 20/04/2021 13:39

Primary school definitely as it will be quiet by 4pm and closed for weeks at a time during the year

QwertyGirly · 20/04/2021 13:39

Pub is worst. School children make noise when we're at work, not when we're trying to sleep. Only thing that would bother me with the school would be car traffic, and stupid parents blocking your car in etc.

Pubs, late music, people smoking outside, noise, all of it would bother me. Unless I'd get a significant discount...

Thisnamewasnttaken123 · 20/04/2021 13:40

Primary school.
I wouldnt like the antisocial behaviour that comes with drunk people.

Ifailed · 20/04/2021 13:40

School, the noise stops at about 4pm, unlike a pub which could go on to midnight or later.

Changeismyname · 20/04/2021 13:40

Pub definitely worse than school. The school is only going to be busy mon-fri in term time. Parking might be annoying briefly twice a day but I always quite liked happy playground noise. Pubs will be noisy evenings and weekends. Much worse.

Ilikewinter · 20/04/2021 13:40

Im in the neither camp BUT i would choose the primary school, wouldnt want to be around a pub at kicking out time, i wouldnt want the constant noise

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 20/04/2021 13:41

I would definitely choose a primary school in spite of the parking issues they present. I work in a primary school so, when I’m at work, the school is open. When I’m at home, the school is closed. Win!

A pub would be horrendous.

GoryGilmore · 20/04/2021 13:41

We live near a primary school too. It’s never been a problem, even the traffic/parking isn’t an issue, the roads are wide enough to accommodate the extra cars parking and most people walk their children to school here anyway. Depends on where you’re positioned relative to the school though perhaps. We also used to live near a pub. We were 8 houses further down the street, but it was still a bloody nightmare. Never again.

bruffin · 20/04/2021 13:41

Depends. I live in an estate next to a school. The problems are parents parking in the road next to the school.
I live within earshot of a pub garden and its rarely an issue

PaniniHead · 20/04/2021 13:41

Definitely a school. I work so not at home all the time, back after school finishes. No noise late at night, weekends or school holidays.
Could not even consider living next to a pub

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 20/04/2021 13:42

Omg school much better than a pub!
Imagine the summer, evenings, all afternoon and night weekends, the smell and sound of boozed up pricks (I am one of these occasional pricks who would be loud in a beer garden).
If you wanted a garden party, or BBQ, or just a glass of wine in the garden you'd be bothered by drinkers and smokers. No way.

At least next to a school even if you're at home all day, the daytime would be a screamy nightmare but come 3.30 the school would be silent. Weekends would be absolutely fine. And long summers with not a noise.

Definitely rather live next door to a school!

MadeForThis · 20/04/2021 13:42

School. At worst it's kids laughing and playing. School bells. Annoying parking.

Pub is loud bass music, adults drunkenly shouting, smoking, piss, vomit. Arguments and fights. Beer garden would make it even worse. Weekend noise day and night.

RightOnTheEdge · 20/04/2021 13:42

Primary school!
At least the noise is during the day and I much prefer the noise of kids playing and having fun although, I'm sure parking and traffic can be a nightmare.
I'd hate the late night noise of a pub. Also the risk of drunks fighting, smashing things or puking on the pavements.
I work in a pub so not snobby about them but wouldn't want to live next to one.

DioneTheDiabolist · 20/04/2021 13:42

I lived next to a primary school. It didn't bother me as I was at work all day and it was quiet at weekends and holidays when I was at home. Pubs are busiest in the evenings, weekends and holidays so more likely to have a negative impact.

Dollywilde · 20/04/2021 13:43

Primary school no question.

We used to live next to a large football club and some people could be sniffy about it, but as we were so close, the security presence was amazing and as a result there was never any trouble as they were trying to disperse people ASAP. The police literally stood outside our house so everyone was impeccably behaved as they passed! Friends of ours were down the road next to the pub all the fans would pile into afterwards and had much more trouble - their experience would definitely put me off being next to a pub.

RaininSummer · 20/04/2021 13:43

Definitely the school as any hassle is brief and particular times of day. I really wouldn't want to live next to pub and especially one with a large garden.

ButtonMoony · 20/04/2021 13:43

Depends entirely on the pub and the school.

A pub that mainly serves food in a nice area is nothing like a city centre drinking pub.

I would rule out based on both tbh. But if I had to love next to one it would be the pub. Couldn't be arsed with all the kids and traffic from a school, parking, litter etc

ColinSupporter · 20/04/2021 13:43

School, it’s likely quiet at night at least. But in reality neither.

Roodicus21 · 20/04/2021 13:44

I lived across the road from a pub but it closed at 11.30 at the latest and there was never any loud music. Occasionally when there was a big sports event those leaving would be rowdy but generally ok.

I now live next to a school. I really like it. No school run for a start, but apart from 30mins of traffic in the morning and again in the afternoon it is so quiet. Weekends and school holidays are bliss!

MedusasBadHairDay · 20/04/2021 13:44

School. Definitely. Parking can be a bit of a nuisance at 9 and 3, but the noise isn't bad. And the parking isn't a problem all year long, summer holidays mean 6 weeks of being able to park without issue.

A quiet little pub might be OK, but if it changed hands it could be horrible.

Trisolaris · 20/04/2021 13:45

Depends on the school and the pub!

A naice gastropub could be alright but mostly I’d choose the school.

JackieTheFart · 20/04/2021 13:47

Primary school would be so much better! Parking might be a pain in the arse but it is in lots of streets no where near a school.

RumHoney · 20/04/2021 13:48

Primary school is much better - the disruption is when i'm out of the house anyway (in non covid times). I've got one just down the road and while i'm WFH there is some noise at lunchtime etc and if we get a delivery at drop off/pick up time there can be a lack of parking but it's not really a major issue.

MrsTophamHat · 20/04/2021 13:49

Primary school hands down.
