With my MN chicken I made 17 meals and three sandwiches.

It can be done!
Large chicken, don't know the weight but it took 2 hours 5 minutes to cook.
We had -
Roast dinner for five.
Chicken fajitas for four.
Chicken and bacon pie for five.
Risotto for three.
And three chicken salad sandwiches.

Two adults, the secondary school kids. Maybe we just don't eat much so our portions are small.

A carrot and half per person per meal doesn’t sound off the wall, no. But a carrot and a half, plus half a broccoli crown, plus same amount of another veg does (to me, per meal, in addition to substantial protein and carbs). I just couldn’t eat that volume of food.

Again, if you want a ratio of 1:2 protein:veg, you don't have to hit 400g of veg because your previous figures were wrong. 200g chicken is not 200g protein.

@sunflowersandbuttercups

I think one poster said they’d cook 1kg chicken breasts for one meal for 5 people. That sounds way over the top to me.

200g of chicken per person is hardly a crazy amount!

but that is nearly 1/2lb of meat person. we do around 75-100g (max 1.4lb) per portion, as recommended by various places.
00100001 · 20/04/2021 13:18

@boobot1

Sorry but a chicken does 1 meal for two adultsConfused
what? 1 meal? Even if you have a wee chicken at 1Kg, that's around 500g of meat.

That's still over 1/2lb of meat per person. :/

More if you have a bigger chicken.

or do you chuck away bits you don't like? for example only have the breasts from the chicken

@Kendodd

Somebody joked upthread about grating chicken, I don't think that's a bad idea! In a fajita we'd only want a little bit of chicken distributed evenly though the other ingredients so it's sort of shredded, we wouldn't want big chunks of chicken anyway. It's a bit like you only want a little bit of grated cheese on a bolognese. Admittedly, I would never have gotten even two family dinners out of one chicken if chicken was 50% of the food on each plate.

I think my enormous number of meals from one chicken is a combination of not eating massive meals and meat to non meat ratio.

Only want a little bit of grated cheese on bolognese? Speak for yourself! I have loads on mine. Cheddar and mozzarella.
Cowbells · 20/04/2021 13:23

They can mock as much as they like OP, but I'm with you. I love a good MN chicken. They last forever. We always get a roast, sandwiches, a risotto and soup from ours.

I cannot believe people think 200g of chicken is to big a portion per person. That’s just what the average supermarket chicken breast weighs (2 pack in Sainsbury’s is 300g and then tend to be smallish). It’s not greedy to essentially eat a large chicken breast. Would you really not give an adult a whole breast in a meal?

I agree with previous posters it would make mor sense to enjoy a meal with a decent portion in it then just eat veggie for the other meals.

Anoisagusaris · 20/04/2021 13:30

@00100001 eh it’s not all edible meat - the carcass, skin etc is included in the weight.

that's why I halved it.

but it IS a big portion.

1/2 of meat is a lot per person.

Think about a double 1/4 pounder at McDonald's - that's a big burger!

gamerchick · 20/04/2021 13:59

Like I said. People have lost sight of what a portion is when they think an adult needs a full breast to themselves. If you cook a big breast, let it cool and then slice it, it shows just how much meat it is.

Bluebird76 · 20/04/2021 14:17

No adult 'needs' a full breast to themselves. But it's not a failure of either morals or health if they decide to eat one now and again. We barely ever eat meat, so on the rare occasion we have a roast chicken, we like to eat a lot of it. The whole idea of measuring 'portions' of particular foods is alien to me. Sometimes I'll eat a shedload of cheese for lunch - because I'm hungry, because it tastes good, because we have some nice cheese in as a special treat. Other times I'll grate a couple of grams of parmesan over spaghetti. Which is a 'proper' portion? Neither. Eat food when you're hungry, don't stuff yourself except as a special treat, and don't see meals as a collection of discrete portions that need careful measuring and managing. Healthy eating involves being in tune with your body, not worrying about whether your piece of cheddar is matchstick sized or not.

Bluebird76 · 20/04/2021 14:18

Oh no, wait, it's meant to be a matchbox not a matchstick, though I don't doubt someone will be along soon to say even a matchstick of cheese should feed at least a family of 6.

It’s basically one large chicken breast, or two small ones.

The greed of it, 😂

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 20/04/2021 14:55

1 chicken breast for 4 people? Maybe that's why so many posters on here are richer and thinner than me Grin

I usually use thighs because they are nicer. I cook 4 of those with peppers and onions for 2 of us (1 adult, 1 teen) and we have a variety of guacamole/salsa/soured cream/ lettuce/cheese/tomatoes/whatever is in the fridge with them.

boobot1 · 20/04/2021 15:04
@boobot1 but that means you're eating a breast, a wing and a leg each plus whatever else there is! At one meal
Yup, though you couldn't pay me to eat a wing, leg or skin. Dont eat offal either, actually only eat chicken breast, topside of beef, or fillet steak no other meat. Just don't like it. Dh is exactly the same, though he will make a sandwich from the legs. I could easily be vegetarian, I often order the vegetarian option in restaurants.

Cannot decide if this is a competitive undereating teeny tiny thread or an advert for eating disorders?

But if it makes you feel better 🤷‍♀️.

My cat gets more chicken per meal than you do, when we eat chicken Grin.

Honestly I’m not sure what this is either. Someone even posted that one chicken nugget sized bit of meat and half a potato for dinner was reasonable and that we’d all forgot reasonable portion sizes,..

I disagree on both counts. A while chicken breast per adult is normal and a McDonald’s quarter pounder is not a big burger! Especially as most people don’t eat these things every day.

Oh don't forget it's the size of the plates you know HmmGrin.

Megan2018 · 20/04/2021 15:59

I sometimes eat 9 chicken nuggets and a large double quarter pounder with cheese meal in one go. Not fat. I love meat and yet I’m a lapsed vegetarian.
I’ll tell DH next time that we should be feeding a whole family on that for a week.

Toddler DD can put away 4 nuggets easily and would eat 6 (she doesn’t get 6-she gets cucumber instead).

I’ll carry on having a chicken leg and breast with my roast dinner, 5 roast potatoes, pile of veg and 2 yorkshires without any guilt.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 20/04/2021 16:05

It really, really isn't.

JorisBonson · 20/04/2021 16:08

Ruddy hell. DP and I could easily have a whole roast chicken between us. Maybe one of us could have a small sandwich with the leftovers. Are you Borrowers?

Bluntness100 · 20/04/2021 16:22

I’m actually roasting a large chicken right now for tonight.there is two of us here. My husband will have a breast, I will have a leg and maybe a wing,,So half a large chicken between two people. Which leaves a leg ans a breast and wing for tomorrow, which will be eaten at lunch time.

So basically four meals v the ops 20. By eating a whole single breast or leg each for one meal ,,we are literally eating five times rhe amount the op serves in a meal.

When my husband takes his breast I shall inform him he should eat a fifth of it and to just cut himself a nugget sized portion...😂

Those that think a breast is far too much for one person- what do you do when you get KFC? Have you ever stooped as low as getting a KFC?
