Anyone else hate sleeping in strange beds?

I wonder if this is an age thing?

I like holidays but as I've got older find I hate sleeping in a bed that isn't mine. Even when they are clean I can't help think of the warm body that's just been in it before me!

It doesn't matter if it's a hotel or a self catering house.

Decades back I slept in any old bed and hardly gave it a thought.

Now, I can't really settle at night and all I want is my own bed.

This has got worse lately after a holiday home we rented had the most disgusting mattress cover. The owners had asked us to strip the bed on leaving as they were short staffed. The mattress cover was badly stained. I know there was sheet on top with it still felt disgusting.
Afterwards I wished I'd complained as it was somewhere we'd stayed many times before and were friendly with the owners.

Anyway- just wondered if anyone feels like me?

Me!

DH says we are never going on holiday again, I always make him drive us back a day or two early because I can’t stand to be on someone else’s saggy mattress under a baggy duvet cover.
We stayed at a 5* SC place in Somerset a couple of years ago and he drove to the nearest Asda to buy new sheets & pillowcases & changed the bed. I still made us leave a day early & he told me to stay out whilst he remade the bed. I dread to think what he didn’t want me to see!

The last place we stayed at in the Cotswolds looked amazing but....... still left early Grin

There’s no place like home.

It's not the thought of someone else having slept in it, I just rarely sleep well in a strange bed, particularly for the first night or two......pillows are never right, duvet gets a gap at the bottom if the bed doesn't have a footboard, mattress is too hard or too saggy, and don't get me started on feathers in pillows or duvets!

VictoriaLudorum · 19/04/2021 16:32

No, I don't have an issue with strange beds, which is just as well since I used to be away from home a lot pre-Covid.
I actually like staying in good hotels, no distractions!

Sparklingbrook · 19/04/2021 16:33

I have always felt like this. If holidaying in the UK I always take my own pillow, and if there's been room in the car our duvet. Grin I seem to have passed this on as the DC always take their own pillows now too.

I never sleep well the first night and yes I do wonder who was possibly lying in the bed possibly twelve hours earlier. Sad And what might be living in the mattress.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 19/04/2021 16:45

I don’t mind as long as they’re big enough (at least king size) and obv. with a good mattress and bedding - no polyester sheets. If I remember, I take my my own pillow, can’t do with anyone else’s - always too stuffed or too hard.

Holiday lets are the worst for crappy beds and duvets - often cheap synthetic duvets that are so old they’ve gone flat like pancakes. There are some real cheapskate holiday let owners around.

I won’t stay anywhere without a king size bed, and why owners don’t install one when there’s plenty of room for it, I can’t understand. As I said, cheapskates.

me!
but I didn't have my own bed as a child. I'm very protective of my bed&bedding as a result!
first night on holiday is awful for me.

CompleteBarstool · 19/04/2021 16:55

I'm a bit hit and miss on first nights.....I could sleep really well or (like at the weekend when we had our first night away in nearly 10 months) I barely sleep all night!

It has nothing to do with the fact other people have slept there and rarely to do with how comfortable it is, it's just one of those things.

GreenTeaBlackCoffeeAndRedWine · 19/04/2021 16:59

Yeah I hate strange beds but only because they just aren't ever as comfy as my own bed, I hate change.

BikeRunSki · 19/04/2021 17:08

DH. Ever since I’ve known him (he was 22 when we met), would always rather not drink, and drive home, rather than stay over anywhere.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 19/04/2021 17:09

I like posh hotel beds, especially the massive ones!

We've just spent the weekend at my mam's caravan though and that bed is awful: tiny, rock hard, ginormous pillows and a winter duvet that's too big for the covers. I couldn't wait to get into our own bed last night and sleep properly!

CreatedANewName · 19/04/2021 17:41

Thank Godit's not just me.

I always take my own pillow as I like my own dust mites Grin
I used to sometimes take my own sheet but where we stay now it is all 100% cotton bedding.

I have found a holiday place with a bed as comfy as home. But I am still aware that someone else was in it just hours before.
And I also have a thing about not lying in a strange bath- showers all the way.

The one thing I cannot bear is light coming in at the crack of dawn- it wakes me up.

I wish owners would put up black out blinds or dark curtains that actually come above curtain poles, so there is not a gap where the sun comes in at 5am.

I am a bit like that. It would have to be extra special for me to not drive home if it's at all possible. Once the festivities are over i want my own bed.

Also I am not mad keen on staying at other people's houses-just get me home!

cookiecreampie · 19/04/2021 19:28

I'm a bit like this. I've always hated sleepovers and the first night of a holiday I can't sleep but I'm ok as long as I've got my DH next to me.

Sparklingbrook · 19/04/2021 19:29

I never sleep properly when I go on residential courses from work. Horrible being in a hotel room on my own, as soon as I get there I want to go home.
