Why are mom jeans suddenly all the rage?

And which is your current favourite pair?

I don’t know why they’re all the rage. They’re certainly not all the rage in my wardrobe. I don’t need jeans with a saggy bum in my life.

skippy67 · 18/04/2021 22:14

They're not.

Beamine · 18/04/2021 22:18

They can be hugely unflattering I feel...

It's not sudden though. Teens have been wearing them for a few years now.

BackforGood · 18/04/2021 22:22

What Afterschool said

Itstheprinciple · 18/04/2021 22:23

I thought they were actually on their way out.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 18/04/2021 22:25

I have no idea. Unless you are stick thing, with an hourglass figure, they generally look like shit, but then so do cropped tops, which is all there seems to be now. What happened to normal length fucking jumpers!!!!!

Plumedenom · 18/04/2021 22:47

We all now have a choice to make. We can either look a bit shit but like we have actually bought something this side of 2021, or keep looking good in skinnies, but only in the same way that older women look good in flannel trousers and pearls. I decided I have seen younger girls looking even worse on them so I should probably bite the bullet. Bought my first pair last week and my crotch is saying thanks at least, even if my DH isn't.

CirqueDeMorgue · 18/04/2021 22:50

Flared jeans are the best, imo.

CorianderBee · 18/04/2021 22:51

They're all the rage because every generation seems to create an identity for themselves apart from the one before which also makes the previous generation seem old fashioned.

So bye bye skinnies hello mom jeans. There's also a level of nostalgia for the 80s/90s as per the 30 year fashion trend shift. And shows like Fresh Prince have come back.

CorianderBee · 18/04/2021 22:52

But I'd say they're actually moving out now and wide leg 90s jeans and even 2000s low rise flares are creeping back (god help us)

mammmamia · 18/04/2021 22:56

I have been wondering the same. I tried on my pre COVID skinnies yesterday. None of the fit or just felt wrong so I have ordered a couple of mom jeans from ASOS to try.

HoldontoOneMoreDay · 18/04/2021 23:03

Somewhere in MNTowers a long-standing admin is recalling their first fashion threads where posters bemoaned these new fangled 'skinny' jeans and said that they'd be prising their bootcuts out of their cold, dead hands....

as141 · 18/04/2021 23:05

What do we think about SilkFred?

nevernotstruggling · 18/04/2021 23:39

They are a bit trying to make fetch happen in my opinion.

Are they worn ironically though because no one is going to tell you mum jeans make you look super slim and leggy are they!

Herein98 · 19/04/2021 00:05

@Plumedenom I can’t stop laughing at this because you’ve summed it up perfectly!

Sorka · 19/04/2021 00:59

@CorianderBee

Good god. Let’s hope we’re not going to see the return of whale tail.
