A colleague is going in hospital for surgery and will be off work for a couple of months. We're making up a gift for her with bits and pieces for while she's at home, magazines etc. Looking for ideas from the wise ones on here.

I don’t think I’ve any further ideas, but I just wanted to say that that is such a lovely and kind thing to do.

Have you her address? Maybe midway through her sick leave you could send a ‘thinking of you’ card or a postal gift?

Wordsearch or crossword puzzle books? Nice mini manicure set?

Lovely! I’ve just had surgery and my lovely friend sent me a box of various Tea Pigs teas and chocolates. Books and magazines are a great idea. New Yorker does a great gift subscription. I have found an eye mask to block out light for day sleeping helpful and nice quality shower gel.

Oh little pampering things. Being in hospital can be a deeply depersonalising experience with a lack of privacy and autonomy. Not to mention all the hospital smells.

Lovely moisturiser is always the first thing I recommend for this reason. As well as a soap/shower cream.

Perhaps a soft scarf or pashmina, wards can be chilly as well as impersonal and the softness is comforting.

Ear plugs and sleep mask.
Cashmere bed socks.

Anything that helps her feel more normal and in tune with her body, a little luxury goes a long way in hospital and when recovering from surgery.

An adult colouring book might be good too
