Dream dinner party

Right, planning ahead for post-lockdown, we're having an extremely piggy dinner party with good friends - 9 people in all.

A good 70's prawn cocktail in glasses to start, with a Bloody Mary.

I'm doing beef welly main.

Guest is bringing dessert.

What sides do I do? Roasties? A couple of green things obviously. What else to make it fancy and add a bit of colour? Maybe spiced red cabbage?

I'm going all out, with wine pairings. We've missed fancy dinners so much.

Any suggestions?

Not spiced red cabbage with beef. Carrots for colour? If v v fancy sliced thinly and bound together with chives? Purple sprouting another. Try for in season.

Ah yes purple broccoli is a good idea. I was thinking of honey roasted carrots too.

Why doesn't red cabbage go with welly?

Not red cabbage with beef Wellington. Maybe asparagus, green beans, dauphinoise potatoes.

DH voting for asparagus wrapped in prosciutto but I don't know if that's meat overload. DH says there's no such thing. But then he's voting for additional yorkies with the welly.

I don't think honey-roasted carrots go either. You want clean-tasting vegetables to off-set the richness of the pastry.

Potato dauphinois
Small roasties in goose fat
Seared green beans with a lemon/olive oil in the pan
Purple sprouting broccoli

I’d do something like this ottolenghi.co.uk/recipes/french-beans-with-shiitake-mushrooms-nutmeg

Would you do both roasties and dauphinois?

Tbh we are planning plenty of booze so may need roasties for late night munching.

I’d do both! I like a full fat juicy delicious meal like that so I’d ha s my beef and the wet dauphinois would be perfect. Dh would prefer roasties so both would be lovely!
