Have you ever reported neighbours for burning waste?

Just wondering.
I have a rather directionless neighbour doing this too often. Tonight the old lady next door was coughing loudly.....
I probably won’t do anything as I think he’s having a rubbish pandemic - but still.....

It's not illegal is it?

Finfintytint · 15/04/2021 19:56

Depends what the local council arrangement is re smoke free zones, etc. Here, I don’t think there’s a limit but other urban councils are more rigid.

Technically he reported himself when he set the hedge on fire its sort of slowed him down I mean he hasn't burned any sofas lately

Ouch!

Yup, I report my neighbour everytime he burns the plastics etc from his renovation project. It billows toxic smoke everywhere....he thinks he's above the law because he's converting a church.

It is against the law to burn anything other than garden waste/wood.

Hesontrial · 15/04/2021 20:10

What reaction do you get from the council? Do you have to tell the it’s you? Do neighbours know?

Yep, well like pp he reported himself by setting fire to our garden.

The fire brigade gave him a right bollocking because he was burning waste from his landscaping business.

He also got an ear full from several neighbours as the fire also destroyed his other neighbours shed. This shed contained all her late husband's belongings....

The fire brigade gave us their non emergency number and told us to ring if he ever does it again.

Sadly he's still doing it 🤦‍♀️ but trying to be more sneaky hoping we don't notice

I know the bonfire man from our local council only too well. I think he has my number stored as the mad bonfire woman from X village.

If I've got smoke billowing across my garden, I report the fuckers. Each and every time. You have to declare who you are but they never tell the person you've reported who it was.

Yes. House behind us was burning a lot of cardboard and paper. Repeatedly.

He ignored complaints from the neighbours, so several of us complained to the council, who took it very seriously and wrote to him telling him that he would be fined if he continued.

That stopped it immediately.

From our council's website:

Coronavirus
We would ask you not to have bonfires during this time as this will further impact upon people with breathing problems. You are encouraged to use our green waste collection service or compost your garden waste at home.

Bonfires and smoke nuisance
Bonfires are unnecessary. They can affect neighbours as well as contributing to poor air quality. Although there are no direct byelaws covering bonfires in the borough, if a bonfire is considered to be a nuisance the Council could take formal action.

We strongly encourage you not to have bonfires because they can also affect people with breathing difficulties. Instead of burning your waste please take it to our Reuse and Recycling Centre, compost garden waste at home, use our garden waste collection service, or our bulky waste collection service.

Report a problem
If you feel that smoke is causing a problem, contact us giving the address where it is being generated.
If smoke from a bonfire is causing a danger to traffic please contact the police.
If you feel that the bonfire is a danger to people and property you should call the fire brigade.

@Hesontrial they never asked my name but I am their only neighbour but quite frankly I don't give a toss. I've emailed pics and videos etc as well to show the severity.

No idea what's happened as we don't talk. He hasn't lit one for a while though.
