What to do about missed call?

Greengrassonhighroad · 14/04/2021 17:54

I received a call a few minutes ago. I didn't recognise the number so I did not pick up. I wasn't expecting a call either.

I think my number was compromised in a data breech a few weeks ago and lately I have been getting calls. I don't answer them.

I got a call but this number is different. It has a local area code.

I googled the number but there isn't an establishment coming up online that has this number.

Not a lot of people have my number. I am thinking maybe it could be the house phone from an aunt but I don't know. I am not at home to check to see if my mother got a call or if she recognises the number.

Do I call the number back or leave it? Or maybe if I get a second call I will pick up.

Unless I'm missing a massive back story; what you do is call the number back.

jellyfishinatent · 14/04/2021 17:56

What a complete non event?

Call it back

RunnerDuck2020 · 14/04/2021 17:56

I’d leave it - they would have left a voicemail if it was someone you actually want to talk to!

DelurkingAJ · 14/04/2021 17:57

If you have an answering machine active then you can simply take the view that if it’s important they would have left a message?

Robintakeover · 14/04/2021 17:58

If it’s important they will leave a message or call again - too many scam calls to bother with numbers you don’t recognise or have programmed in

JayAlfredPrufrock · 14/04/2021 17:58

I’d burn your phone and get a new contract and a new number.

BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 14/04/2021 17:58

If it was important they'd leave a message

Choice4567 · 14/04/2021 17:58

Unless a big backstory you’re completely over thinking this. If you want to find out, phone it back. If not, leave it and they’ll phone back if it’s important

FAQs · 14/04/2021 17:58

If it’s important they’ll ring back so unless they have left a message ignore it? Not sure what the worry is?

VettiyaIruken · 14/04/2021 17:59

People can always leave a message.
I'd just leave it.
If your number has been acquired and you've been getting spam calls then you get an apparently local call from a number you don't know and doesn't return any results, I'd guess it's spoofing (I think it's called) where some tech wizardry makes a call appear local.

Having a local code goes for nothing. Spammers clone numbers to make them look like local calls.

You're massively overthinking it though. Call it back if you're bothered or do what everyone else does and ignore it.

GreenWheat · 14/04/2021 18:03

Just ignore it if you're not expecting a call and have voicemail. Could be someone dialling a wrong number, a cold sales call or a scammer. If you simply ignore all of these, nothing will happen!

Scarby9 · 14/04/2021 18:04

I would ignore it.
If it is a genuine caller they will ring back and leave a message.
I had a series of daily calls on my land line - just one a day at 3pm - from a series of "genuine' landline numbers. A different one each day.
Unless it is a number I know, I let my answerphone kick in after 4 rings and only pick up once the caller starts to speak if it doesn't sound scammy. Never once did these callers leave a message.
I call phishing. Ignore.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 14/04/2021 18:04

OP, you're clearly anxious about this, ignore the people who are being unkind.

Unfortunately a lot of unwanted calls, whether scams or just cold calling, are coming now from local and mobile numbers. As others have said, ignore, they will call back if urgent or leave a message if you have an answer phone. If you don't have an answer phone, might be worth investing in one and having it on permanently. You can pick up of you recognise the number or let the answer phone kick in if you don't. If no message left, ignore it.

Crunchymum · 14/04/2021 18:04

Does something so mundane normally cause you so much stress @Greengrassonhighroad?

I'm actually not being facetious, but it seems like a huge overreaction on your part.

Elieza · 14/04/2021 18:05

I don’t phone numbers back in case they are a tenner a minute type ones and I get hit with a bill.

Google the number. If it indicates a scam then you know. If not the person will call back or leave a message.

aibutohavethisusername · 14/04/2021 18:05

Look on the website ‘who called me’

Imreaaaaady · 14/04/2021 18:06

When I got up this morning my shoes were untied. How do I wear these shoes now?

Greengrassonhighroad · 14/04/2021 18:06

I'm just after checking. I don't have voicemail set up.

I think I will leave it be. If it was urgent, they will phone me back.

Local means nothing.

There’s currently a scam doing the rounds where you get a missed call and when you call it back it’s a premium rate number but it’s been spoofed to look like a different number so you don’t find out until you get your bill...

FlyingBurrito · 14/04/2021 18:11

@JayAlfredPrufrock

I’d burn your phone and get a new contract and a new number.
That's not enough for this serious situation, witness protection maybe Grin

Come on OP you're being ridiculous Grin

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 14/04/2021 18:12

@Imreaaaaady

Why are you being so unpleasant when someone is clearly worried about something? Might be trivial to you but we've no idea about OP's circumstances.
InTheNightWeWillWish · 14/04/2021 18:13

Some scammers are using local phone numbers now to trick people into answering their phone.

Don’t phone them back. If it’s urgent, they’ll call again but you might want to enable voicemail so people can leave messages if you’re screening.
