Any tips on how to avoid a post-lunchtime energy slump?

I’m sat here in my husband’s big leather study chair and could happily sink into a post-lunch dribbly, snory snooze with a book over my face like an elderly Victorian gentleman might. I should be writing reports for work and was really productive this morning. I ate a terrible nap-inducing lunch of French bread pizza, salad and Easter egg. Any tips (apart from not eating lunch at all, which would make me murderous) to avoid the lull? I do acknowledge getting out of the chair of snoozes would be a start.

Have an espresso and then immediately have a cat nap for 20 mins (set alarm). The espresso will mean that when you wake up you wont feel groggy.

Have a snack at about 11am so you don’t eat such a big lunch. Try to eat low-carb and get some fresh air and exercise after eating.

Eat lunch later?

TheDogsMother · 14/04/2021 14:17

No white carbs. I never get the mid afternoon slump since I gave these up.

BoogleMcGroogle · 14/04/2021 14:21

It is the white carbs isn't it? So sad, I love a bit of baguette.

What can I eat instead that won't leave me hungry?

When I'm in my clinic, I go for a post-lunch walk, which helps a lot. There's not reason not to do that at home too I guess.

Have something like scrambled eggs to fill you up instead of carbs, which just make you want to eat more carbs.

I feel the need to sleep after lunch every single day. I eat a massive salad with protein, water, then fruit and yog & dark chocolate.

About 10 mins after eating I start looking around for bribes to stop the dogs mithering me while I crash out for ten mins.

Nothing works other that standing up and being busy.

Its the chair.

BertieBotts · 14/04/2021 14:33

Scrambled eggs don't fill me up unless I have bread with them. I've had omelette for lunch before and I just feel hungry immediately afterwards.

Megan2018 · 14/04/2021 14:35

I could post a healthy response about fresh air, walking and eating fewer carbs.

But tbh I find having a large fat coke (as opposed to the diet shit) and 2 pro-plus is the route to productive happiness Grin

TheDogsMother · 14/04/2021 14:36

Eggs keep me fed for a long time. A tuna and egg salad maybe ? I had tuna sweetcorn today mixed up with 0% Greek yoghurt and that was really filling.

OliverBabish · 14/04/2021 14:39

Let me know when you find the answer! I could sleep all afternoon

bonzo77 · 14/04/2021 14:41

Eat much less and more often. Skip the carbs. Don’t sit in that comfy chair.

Topseyt · 14/04/2021 14:41

I get the afternoon lull too. A bit less so now that the days are longer and lighter, but it still happens.

I find I just have to go for a walk, or get up and do something or I can easily nod off.

NameChangedForThisFeb21 · 14/04/2021 14:42

Have a protein and fat based lunch that’s very low in carbs.

NameChangedForThisFeb21 · 14/04/2021 14:43

And no sugar!

theculture · 14/04/2021 14:45

A walk after lunch, good for your mental and physical health and allows your subconscious brain to mull over problems so to proven to be more effective at work afterwards!

BoogleMcGroogle · 14/04/2021 14:46

OliverBabish I'd LOVE to sleep all afternoon. Just once. Curled up on my bed in a spot of sun like a cat. I can't think of anything nicer. Maybe doing in in Southern France would be nicer.

My SIL, an A and E doctor also swears by Proplus and a fat coke on the night shift, but it's harder to justify at 2.30 in the afternoon.

During my A-levels I got a bit addicted to those dextrose sweets you used to buy from the chemist (along with your Heather Shimmer lipstick and single-use cameras). I might get into those again.

I've got a tip of my own. DO NOT try putting The Archers on. It's like aural melatonin.

I do feel better for going out for a 30-40 minute walk. I go the same way every day and watching Spring unfolding with trees coming into leaf and even a butterfly today is lovely.

RacheyCat · 14/04/2021 16:49

I just stopped eating lunch. No more post-lunch slump! I have an early-ish tea. Sometimes have a latte mid afternoon if I'm really feeling hungry or if I'm going to yoga before I eat.
