Things that you cook that inexplicably smell bad

Maybe it’s just me, but I tend to smell food before I eat it and I am quite sensitive to anything that doesn’t smell quite right, even if I know the food is fresh.

Tonight I cooked some basmati rice - I usually love the smell of basmati rice but this was a mix with some wild rice and had a really unpleasant earthy, kind of almost manure kind of smell. Really odd. It tasted ok so I forced myself to eat it but will have to throw out the rest of the packet!!

Anyone else like that?

Don’t throw it out just because it smells funny when you cook it! Such a waste of food.

I can't stand basmati rice because of the smell!

No don't toss it, wild rice is lovely and very good for you!

Not so lovely or good when it's actually basmati though!!

I was going to say rice! I think it’s the starch that gathers on the top of the water whilst it’s cooking.

I don’t usually throw out food - I promise! And I usually love all rice and different grains - but this one just smelled unpleasant. I am peri menopausal and in general not feeling myself so I wonder if it’s related to that.

I think my camomile tea smelt of feet earlier. Is that a thing? It could have been my husbands feet that smelt though

I made roasted cauliflower, leek, spinach and pea mac and cheese recently. The combination of cauliflower and Parmesan actually made it smell like dog shit, once it had cooled before final cooking in the oven. It tasted delicious though.

Yes! I love camomile tea but sometimes - particularly the posh ones with more bits of flowers - it can have a rather unpleasant smell!
