DH has started teaching himself acoustic guitar, it's his birthday soon as he's notoriously hard to buy for so I'm going to aim for aome guitar gifts... But i have no idea... What could I get him?

A guitar foot rest is good - helps stop backache. Guitar strap and capo.

doadeer · 13/04/2021 18:55

Anything to look for with a guitar strap or recommended shops to buy from?

When my dc started music lessons(not guitar) the thing he really enjoyed was sheet music for beginner in his favorite genre of music.

Guitar stool. Much better than sitting on chair/sofa/bed.

mybonnieliesovertheocean2 · 13/04/2021 18:59

get him easy guitar tunes book from music shop and a music stand

BikeRunSki · 13/04/2021 18:59

A clip on tuner
Music stand
Sheet music - simplified versions of whatever music style he likes
Foot rest
Plectrums? If he uses them. DS does on his uke, but not on his guitar, I don’t know what the protocol is.

I got DH a subscription to Total Guitar magazine (there are others)
Acoustic Guitar For Dummies

doadeer · 13/04/2021 19:12

What are the top guitar/ music retailers?

I recommend PMT, GuitarGuitar (both have physical stores), Gear4Music.

gwilt · 13/04/2021 19:34

My husband has added 'buy him lessons'.

He'd taught himself for years, and thought he was OK, and now absolutely loves his lessons, where his teacher shares his passion for music, has supportively untaught his bad habits and taught him so much new stuff.

AliciaMayEmory · 13/04/2021 19:40

My DS plays electric guitar and for Christmas he asked for a new guitar strap, tin of plectrums, music stand, capo etc. But must admit, since he started proper lessons and not just the in-school lessons, he’s come on so much. So I agree about some actual lessons, if that would be something he’d be interested in.

WildCherryBlossom · 13/04/2021 19:57

A footstep, a music stand, a guitar strap (many of these require a hole to be drilled in the guitar), plectrums

WildCherryBlossom · 13/04/2021 19:58

Agree with pp's husband who suggests lessons!

ohidoliketobe · 13/04/2021 20:02

DH is avid guitarist.
Yes to lessons but it's very trial and error who you click with, so possibly wouldn't buy a block of lessons with one particular person - maybe a few trial ones and then commit to a block once they've clicked with the tutor.
"cheaper" options: capo, plectrums, strap, stand, hard back carry case, cleaning kits

mybonnieliesovertheocean2 · 13/04/2021 20:29

ooh actually i agree with lessons!

Sweetener12 · 14/04/2021 09:56

Lessons is the best suggestion! You can get him a subscription to online courses or learning websites, like something from this list- www.musicradar.com/news/-the-best-online-guitar-lessons-sites-and-apps-to-help-you-improve Or, if you have any friends or acquaintances who play guitar quite well, you can ask them to help you with creating your own lessons. They can share some basic info and then you combine it into a video in an auto slideshow maker and your DH gets a custom learning video!
