Disappointed that Morrisons have stopped 10% teachers discount without notice

It is a trek to get there to shop, but I did it once a week or so and even put the app on my phone so they could scan the discount barcode.

Then, last time I visited and did my big shop, the app didn't show the barcode and this is when I first found out that Morrisons had stopped the discount the day before.

I did not receive any notice or warning and this is why I am disappointed. If I knew in advance I still would have shopped there occasionally for the butchery and offal meats (its a marvellous selection) and not for all my shopping (Aldi is my usual and walking distance from home).

I wish Morrisions have put a notice at the entrance to warn us because of the short notice, but I guess that would not be good for business.

Maybe it's cos they are "better paid" that shops offer them the discounts ie they have more income to spend in their store, so if a small discount entices them in so be it. And you get the positive marketing benefits of it as you're seen to be "caring" about teachers etc. Makes good business sense.

Alternista · 13/04/2021 20:05

@Loopylobes

I don't see why any workers who are receiving their usual salaries have been offered discounts in the first place.

There's been a lot of bandwagon jumping and very little critical thinking around all the pandemic-discounts.

There are plently of people who are financially worse-off due to Covid. I doubt that there are many education and NHS staff amongst them.

That isn't me bashing teachers BTW, or NHS staff for that matter. I think it was great that supermarkets provided NHS staff with opportunities for shopping quickly and safely when lots of them were working ridiculously long shifts and feeling exhausted. That was an offer that made perfect sense.

Agree with every word of this.

I’m another one who says why the hell should teachers get a discount, the rest of us work full time too ..for much less pay and as much hassle

That’s probably true, rich people given more benefits as usual.
Mistressinthetulips · 13/04/2021 20:14

From the OP - kitchen staff, jannies, support staff, learning assistants.
None particularly well paid I would think.

There's always one.

@badlydraenbear

The NHS 10% is continuing in store until the end of the year. It is not available online anymore, instead you get a free anytime delivery pass.

mooonstone · 13/04/2021 20:29

Surely as a teacher you would read the fine print to be comprehensively informed, as there’s always T&C stating that retailers have the right to stop discounts/promotions without notice. By using their scheme, you accepted their terms. It’s therefore not that shitty that they removed it in the manner they did.

Thank you for all your hard work though, it’s nice that you managed to find a few gems in Morrison’s. I actually think they’re quite well priced overall, so hopefully this doesn’t increase your outgoings too much.

I am a support assistant not a teacher, but true, I didn't read the 'fine print' of the offer.

In my limited experience I assumed that the withdrawal of the discount would have been publicised the same way as all other aspects of it had.

I was wrong.

I was delighted to find the marrow bones as I use them to make soup; roasted then put in the slow cooker for 24 hours, cool the liquid, chip off the fat at the top to use for cooking, make a soup with the liquid. They are difficult to source ready cut from butchers.

The discount included all education staff. TAs earn some little I believe they don't even pay income tax.
buffyp · 14/04/2021 10:52

@normalsaline

Just be grateful you got a discount for a while and move on 🤷🏻‍♀️
This. Morrison’s was the only supermarket not to acknowledge social care workers like me and my husband. Apparently we don’t count as keyworkers.

Ahh poor OP, feeling a little bored on your Half Term hold are you? Grin

Mistressinthetulips · 14/04/2021 11:04

Not half term is it? Or that would be a hell of a long term!

ThanksItHasPockets · 14/04/2021 11:15

‘Teachers’ discount’ is pretty misleading as it applied to anyone who worked in an educational establishment, including early years workers who are very often forgotten about but have worked through the most recent lockdown in very close contact with children.

Feel free to retrain - teachers are in short supply and you could be getting so much more money and only the same amount of hassle as you already get (but with the extra bonus hassle that comes with being a teacher on MN). Go on - you’ll love it!
Yolanda524 · 14/04/2021 13:21

I got notice about them changing the nhs discount to in store only but it was quite sudden. I always shopped online with them anyway so it was a lovely bonus. Now I have to go in store to get the discount. They have given me a free delivery pass but the 10% off each week is better than the pass so I now go I store to get my discount.
I guess they think we will spend more in store but I spend less as I hate packing all the bags at the checkout and pushing heavy trolleys around and then bringing it all in from the car etc.

It’s not half term! It’s the Easter holidays (for some areas still) half term is midway between summer and Christmas / Christmas and Easter / Easter and summer. Not really relevant to the argument here but just another lack of understanding of the school system...
clary · 14/04/2021 14:02

While I agree that NHS staff and education staff are not more deserving per se than, say, retail staff or those who work in care homes, people do understand, don't they, that any discount like this is a business decision.

It's not funded by the public purse or your taxes. It comes from Morrisons, who I presume thought it was a good way to encourage NHS staff to shop ther. It worked too - I work for the NHS and have switched to Morrisons for a lot of things as the discount makes it cheaper than Aldi.

Lots of people get discounts, as others have noted. Seasalt gave me 50% off in March. My dd gets 10% off at ASOS. DH can buy vouchers that give him 6% off at Currys PC world. Doesn't mean we are special.

FWIW I would say thank you to teachers and school support staff who have had an especially difficult time of it. I was a teacher and I cannot imagine working remotely for so long, under such pressure.

I agree!
converseandjeans · 14/04/2021 14:13

I don't know why people are ok with NHS getting discount & not other professions. Many NHS staff are currently wfh or are back room and not patient facing. Lots doing calls via Zoom or Teams.

I think there will be plenty of teaching jobs coming up after the pandemic. So those jealous of all the perks should be able to find a job in the teaching profession.

I enjoy working with teenagers and it's never boring. 10% off at the supermarket wouldn't make me want to teach.

converseandjeans · 14/04/2021 14:18

clary thank you. How did you find out about sea salt offer? I completely missed that?!

PerhapsInchyraBlue · 14/04/2021 14:19

It's been a while since there has been so much vitriol towards education staff. It looks like some people wish the holidays were over already.

@MarchXX there are also two Waitrose in Edinburgh. One unsurprisingly in Morningside, and the other Comely Bank. They are both lovely, but I'm not sure you'd get your bone marrow there.

FrippEnos · 14/04/2021 14:21

Lets hope that no-one mentions the other discounts that we get through the unions and other specialist shops.

It will make some poster's minds explode.

I genuinely can't recall. I think it was with a Blue Light card, but that's only a fiver so it was worth it for my £75 coat. Actually I think it was an MN thread 😀😀
