Disappointed that Morrisons have stopped 10% teachers discount without notice

It is a trek to get there to shop, but I did it once a week or so and even put the app on my phone so they could scan the discount barcode.

Then, last time I visited and did my big shop, the app didn't show the barcode and this is when I first found out that Morrisons had stopped the discount the day before.

I did not receive any notice or warning and this is why I am disappointed. If I knew in advance I still would have shopped there occasionally for the butchery and offal meats (its a marvellous selection) and not for all my shopping (Aldi is my usual and walking distance from home).

I wish Morrisions have put a notice at the entrance to warn us because of the short notice, but I guess that would not be good for business.

How predictable that the teacher badgers came out the woodwork.
Yanbu to be surprised that they'd ended the discount. I'm a regular Morrison's shoppers and seen the NHS discount advertised heavily online and in store but not the teacher one recently.

@normalsaline

Just be grateful you got a discount for a while and move on 🤷🏻‍♀️
Oh I am and I will Grin.

I didn't know about this. How cheeky of them. Can't think why they are eligible for a discount. Pay 10% extra more like. Let them go to Waitrose.

ilovesooty · 13/04/2021 18:24

I'd love to know how those resenting this discount were personally impacted by its short term availability to teachers.

LST · 13/04/2021 18:24

Wasn't just teachers. My mum works in a college canteen and she got the discount too!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 13/04/2021 18:25

Morrison’s were one of the very few who rightly viewed teachers as key workers. Most places offered discoubt to NHS at the start of the pandemic. Morrison’s included teachers in theirs.

Because as teachers were covering key worker children it enabled the NHS workers to be able to work.

Unnecessarily unpleasant.

I am a teacher and it was a wonderful bonus to receive the discount. Every week when I shopped I enquired if the discount was still running as I did not want to assume I was forever entitled to it. It was just a bonus however, not a God given right. Just be thankful that you got it in the first place.
Er, right.

Perhaps I did not make it crystal clear that I did not complain that it ended, but that it ended suddenly with no notice period.

Nasty black & white feral creatures that they are!

ilovesooty · 13/04/2021 18:28

@MarchXX it was clear what you meant but it isn't going to prevent people from interpretating as they want and from being unpleasant unfortunately.

Yes that's true, I was one of the support staff who manned the Hub schools throughout and I saw first hand how hard the teachers working from home worked to support their pupils. Without exception, they were desperate to get back to the classroom, we all were.

Now we're back (Scotland) we really appreciate it.

I'm in Scotland, I don't think there are any Waitrose's. Where do you recommend instead?

Yes, it included everyone who worked in 'education'. Fabulous while it lasted.

It was presumably a marketing exercise
Can’t see why teachers would need money off their shopping!

Mistressinthetulips · 13/04/2021 18:32

I assumed @Viviennemary was making a joke Smile

WestendVBroadway · 13/04/2021 18:33

@MarchXX, I was aware it was ending, as originally it was just for November, then up until Christmas then extended monthly. I was aware it was ending in April, just couldn't remember exactly when.

ItsLikeSputnik · 13/04/2021 18:33

Teachers were sent an email explaining the discount was ending. It was sent to the educational email addresses used to register for the discount originally. It may have been missed by some as it was sent over half term holidays. I work for Morrison’s and that’s the official line on it.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 13/04/2021 18:33

For the same reasons the Nhs were granted money off

LST · 13/04/2021 18:34

@MarchXX brilliant! I fully supported it

I must admit I have had little exposure to "teacher hate" on mn so far. Guess I have been lucky. Wink

I also sometimes go out of my way to go to Morrisons or spend more than I might otherwise have because of the 10% discount I get for working for the NHS. Have they stopped this too? (I saw posters talking about NHS free delivery etc, but I am talking about a discount I got at the till when I remembered to take work ID).
For what it's worth, I am very grateful to Morrisons for giving 10% discount but don't feel entitled to it in any way. I am also glad they recognised the hard work teachers have done over the past year and a bit to look after and teach my DC so I could work.

ItsLikeSputnik · 13/04/2021 18:36

NHS discount is remaining in place for in store purchases until the end of this year Smile

It was not just for teachers but for everyone who worked in all educational establishments; nurseries, colleges, unis. For example I am a support assistant and earn part time minimum wage so I was delighted to receive 10% off. Kitchen staff, cleaning staff, janitors, etc., we all benefited too.

Ah, you see that is when I had a chat to a member of staff in March and they told me to get the app because they would no longer be accepting my ID badge as evidence of working in education.

I had to apply and give my work email address, which they checked and sent me a confirmation email when my application was successful.

I was told it would be for the rest of this year, at least.

That is really useful to know as Morrisons have my work email address but I had not received an email from them. I have been off for easter so maybe missed the email. However, perhaps a month's notice would have been better?
