Disappointed that Morrisons have stopped 10% teachers discount without notice

It is a trek to get there to shop, but I did it once a week or so and even put the app on my phone so they could scan the discount barcode.

Then, last time I visited and did my big shop, the app didn't show the barcode and this is when I first found out that Morrisons had stopped the discount the day before.

I did not receive any notice or warning and this is why I am disappointed. If I knew in advance I still would have shopped there occasionally for the butchery and offal meats (its a marvellous selection) and not for all my shopping (Aldi is my usual and walking distance from home).

I wish Morrisions have put a notice at the entrance to warn us because of the short notice, but I guess that would not be good for business.

@badlydrawnbear

I also sometimes go out of my way to go to Morrisons or spend more than I might otherwise have because of the 10% discount I get for working for the NHS. Have they stopped this too? (I saw posters talking about NHS free delivery etc, but I am talking about a discount I got at the till when I remembered to take work ID). For what it's worth, I am very grateful to Morrisons for giving 10% discount but don't feel entitled to it in any way. I am also glad they recognised the hard work teachers have done over the past year and a bit to look after and teach my DC so I could work.
No, I was told that the NHS discount is ongoing (but check, anyway).

Not the point of the thread but there are Waitrose in Scotland, I have 2 near me.

Icenii · 13/04/2021 18:45

We have schemes at work that give us good discounts across many shops. We have a Morrisons one but I never use it because I can't be bothered to shop in person. I'm not a teacher.

Icenii · 13/04/2021 18:46

That was for those moaning about teachers getting discounts.

ItsLikeSputnik · 13/04/2021 18:46

It probably would have made more sense, but discounts were offered on a discretionary basis so I guess they can be withdrawn whenever Morrison’s feel like it.
Discount was also withdrawn on the same day for our in store cleaners, security staff and Nutmeg clothing staff Sad

Adding more unnecessary infoGrin there are six in Scotland, all in the central belt!

@badlydrawnbear

Blue light card holders get 10% off until end of June. If you haven't got one already, I would. It's well worth it

I assumed *@Viviennemary* was making a joke Smile
Nope, not based on previous form. It was entirely on-brand for her Hmm
expectopelargonium · 13/04/2021 19:00

They already had extended it once, and could hardly be expected to continue the scheme indefinitely.

Just be thankful that they gave it to you in the first place.

I'm not a teacher-basher, I have an enormous regard for anyone who chooses to enter the profession.

I do find public-sector discounts a bit strange though. Surely anyone who works contributes to society (and I'm not just talking about paid workers). The people on the tills at Morrisons are getting paid less than teachers but are doing an equally important job, it's lower paid because it's less skilled. It's not less important though. No-one's falling over themselves to offer retail staff blanket discounts.

Plus, public sector workers enjoy all the benefits associated with public-sector work.

SeasonFinale · 13/04/2021 19:18

God they are really going to hate it when I say that Perkbox which is a scheme our school uses does get a Waitrose discount Grin

SeasonFinale · 13/04/2021 19:19

@ShrikeAttack you do realise that retail workers including supermarket workers do already benefit from hefty staff discount schemes though?

ShrikeAttack · 13/04/2021 19:21

Yes @SeasonFinale, I do. Only at the shops they work at though. No fucker's offering them a discount purely by dint of being a retail worker.

Loopylobes · 13/04/2021 19:23

I don't see why any workers who are receiving their usual salaries have been offered discounts in the first place.

There's been a lot of bandwagon jumping and very little critical thinking around all the pandemic-discounts.

There are plently of people who are financially worse-off due to Covid. I doubt that there are many education and NHS staff amongst them.

That isn't me bashing teachers BTW, or NHS staff for that matter. I think it was great that supermarkets provided NHS staff with opportunities for shopping quickly and safely when lots of them were working ridiculously long shifts and feeling exhausted. That was an offer that made perfect sense.

BashfulClam · 13/04/2021 19:23

@MarchXX there is a Waitrose in Milngavie, one in the west end (the one outside Helensburgh closed which broke my heart) there is also one just outside Edinburgh.

SeasonFinale · 13/04/2021 19:25

Lots of the retailers are in groups though and by virtue of being in a group do get discounts elsewhere, as well as corporate discount schemes.

How sad that people are jealous of discounts that other people are legitimately using,

Ffsseriously · 13/04/2021 19:26

@SeasonFinale i work in a supermarket it most certainly is not a hefty discount at 10%

ShrikeAttack · 13/04/2021 19:26

@SeasonFinale, nobody's saying, 'Great job retail workers. Thanks for giving up all your weekends and significant holidays to keep the industrial machine ticking over for consumers. In honour of your sacrifice and minimumwage acceptance, here's a discount'.

What's being said is that teachers and blue-light services, are somehow exhaulted, and should be venerated by discounts. Despite their healthy holiday allowance, pension and decent pay.

Which is a bit odd. Really.

OverTheRainbow88 · 13/04/2021 19:27

@Loopylobes

Yes, it does seem quite mad.

sorryforswearing · 13/04/2021 19:28

I found out at the till this evening. Wish I’d known before I spent ages downloading the app. Then once downloaded had all sorts of problems logging in. Think a score of 2 out of 10 is generous.

ShrikeAttack · 13/04/2021 19:30

I'm not jealous @SeasonFinale. I work in neither retail nor public service. It just seems an odd and divisive stance that certain businesses have taken.

peak2021 · 13/04/2021 19:31

Finding out before you went to the shop seems reasonable to me. I'm sure the decision was linked to the re-opening of all shops if it stopped yesterday.

If it had been government then I would suspect the method of communication, but not a supermarket chain.

Mistressinthetulips · 13/04/2021 19:39

You can discounts on certain things (I got 10% off a holiday once) by being on mumsnet. Do mumsnetters particularly deserve a discount?
It is a business decision, not a humanitarian one.
