Spelling program for an older child (10)

My son is nearly 10 but is 3-4 years behind with spelling. We've tried a few spelling programs but they are either just rubbish or obviously aimed at much younger children. Has anyone used anything designed for older children with poor spelling - he has no phonetic understanding at all and sight reads words so its completely random what he can and can't spell - can spell some long words and then gets some really common words completely wrong. Thanks!

What are the school doing? They should be doing intensive phonics with him. Look at Ruth Miskin Fresh Start Series.

Apples and pears worked for mine, but it is monotonous.

I came on to say Fresh Start, Read Write Inc. it's a brilliant programme.

@Choconuttolata school aren't particularly interested as he isn't badly behaved and isn't behind in any other areas other than spelling and writing. His reading is roughly age appropriate. I've tried contacting the school and got nowhere really so looking to try and support at home.
