Sandpaper or glasspaper ?

To me, it's sandpaper and always will be. The only person I knew who called it glasspaper was a woodwork teacher in my secondary school. He practically INSISTED glasspaper was the correct term!

I was brought up (home and school) to use sandpaper.

Sandpaper here, always has been, and my Dad was a keen woodworker

I've never heard of glasspaper, only ever sandpaper.

I thought (but I may be wrong) that glasspaper is harsher, made from tiny bits of glass on the paper. So they're actually made from different things (glass/sand). I'm sure my df had both used for different jobs.

It's glass paper in French (I've never heard it called that in English though). At the end of the day glass and sand are pretty much the same thing I guess. 🤷‍♀️

I've heard "glasspaper" used before. I think nowadays it specifically refers to old fashioned stuff and sandpaper is the more general term.

WildRosie · 12/04/2021 19:56

Harris, who make the stuff, call it glasspaper. I suppose they're entitled to call it what they want but I still say sandpaper.

I think it’s what woodwork teachers are taught in woodwork teacher 101

I had no idea they were different terms for the same thing.

I always thought they were different things - that sandpaper was the rougher stuff on yellowish paper and glass paper was the finer stuff on black paper.

I think I only thought this because somebody gave me some of the very find stuff and called it glass paper.
