If you could share one household tip/life hack, what would it be?

Mine would definitely be that drying clothes in sunlight gets rid of tomato/sauce stains. Am weaning my second child and it's a bloody lifesaver. No more soaking things for hours that still come out with orange marks on them.

What other gems are there that I need to know?

Don't peel carrots, mushrooms or potatoes. Wash and use.

After hoovering the floors, give your dog a quick once over with the hoover (as long as they're not terrified of it).

It's easier to repaint walls than wash them down. Buy a few tester pots when you buy your wall paint for future touch ups.

It's better to spend more money for a smaller selection of quality fruit and veg than buying a million things from Lidl or Aldi that turn into green sludge in 24 hours and taste like shit.

Never write anything, to anyone, that you wouldn't want to see on the front page of a newspaper

This is something I tell my teenagers a lot .^

osbertthesyrianhamster · 12/04/2021 21:54

Outsource as much as possible. Those beeswax wraps are pants. Those veg bags from Lakeland are awesome.

Lostlittlelady · 12/04/2021 21:55

Lower your standards

36degrees · 12/04/2021 21:56

@noseofjericho I really don't like the taste of long life milk, I guess it's a case of what you're used to. @Doomsdayiscoming you don't keep it for ever, just until you've had a cup of tea 🤣

Moonwhite · 12/04/2021 22:07

Can confirm that putting veet down the plug hole will not dissolve all the hair in there, it just goes slimy and gross

I've actually done something similar to this but I was advised to buy the cheapest nastiest hair removing cream going. Maybe Veet is too civilized for plug holes Grin

crochetmonkey74 · 12/04/2021 22:08

Do little jobs whilst waiting for something else (kettle, microwave etc)

masterofthechef · 12/04/2021 22:08

@Chicchicchicchiclana

For hair in plug holes you need those bendy long wire things with a little brush on the end. Put it down as far as it will go, wiggle it around in a spiral motion and pull it out. Gross but satisfying but much better and cheaper than pouring acid into the water system.
did that and thought I had caught Sadako hiding down the drain. horror reference

Where do you buy your fruit and veg from?
MrsBobDylan · 12/04/2021 22:10

@SchadenfreudePersonified please accept my apologies

I think @Lostlittlelady has nailed it. Marriage, children and dogs have thus far forced my standards to somewhere just shy of a squat.

rc22 · 12/04/2021 22:17

@Muminabun

Marry a tradesman
I often wish I'd done this although I love my teacher DH dearly!! I have childhood memories of stressful weekends when my dad (a social worker) attempted DIY jobs!! They do say that tradesmen are too busy doing other people's houses to do their own though aren't they?
rc22 · 12/04/2021 22:18

*don't they

BillMasheen · 12/04/2021 22:19

@36degrees

Empty your ice cube trays before you go on holiday and fill them with milk to freeze instead. It means you can have a cuppa as soon as you get home, even if your flight's delayed and the shops are shut.
OR...Have a disgusting milk related experience as a student

NEVER drink the stuff ever again and be smug enjoying your black tea while everyone else moans about milk.
(Also works ON holiday, in houseshares etc etc)

IdblowJonSnow · 12/04/2021 22:20

If you cba to buy a steam mop, just pour boiling water in your mop bucket. Floors dry really quickly.

Have a partner who pulls their weight and doesn't think they're just 'helping'. Get the kids trained early.

sharond101 · 12/04/2021 22:22

Put some paper towel in the base of your vegetable drawer in the fridge and store any bagged vegetables loose. Keeps fruit and vegetables fresher for longer.

Buy a rice cooker - best gadget ever for perfect hassle free rice everytime.

Buy an electric diffuser for a beautiful smelling house at at the touch of a button.

Put clothes on hangers as you iron and much easier to put away when done.

Always cook double of a freezer proof meal and freeze half for a busy night.

Not just sauce, but baby poo. I genuinely thought I had gone utterly mad in the very early days of the Small Person when I hung some stained sheets out to dry (though fuckit, I’ll use em as rags) then went to collect them in after a summer’s day of drying... and the stain had gone. WTAF.?!

It took a few more poosplosions before I finally worked it out.

ladygoingGaga · 12/04/2021 22:27

Toothpaste is marvellous for cleaning the white parts of trainers and making them look like new again.
Teenage DS thinks I’m a magician Wink

DrChrisWhitty · 12/04/2021 22:28

@Asvan Riverford! I get a large fruit and veg box delivered weekly for £24 and it really lasts. The only downside is I have more carrots than I know what to do with.

borntobequiet · 12/04/2021 22:28

After hoovering the floors, give your dog a quick once over with the hoover (as long as they're not terrified of it).

My dog loved this and used to follow me about in anticipation while I vacuumed.

bubblebath62636 · 12/04/2021 22:31

Don't be sucked in by the whole 'Mrs Hinch' thing.

Remember it's how she makes a living, there's more to life than cleaning and having a spotless home.

Cleaning has become 'trendy' now making people feel they have to be on the ball when it comes to cleaning.

Do the basics then have a cuppa or read a book.

Fuck the 'domestic goddess' approach.

Cowbells · 12/04/2021 22:33

5 minute room rescues. If the house is a tip, set a timer for five minutes, pick a room and do what you can in that time. Go for the big stuff - hang up coats and bags, put away shoes, chuck old post and papers, put stray coffee mugs in the dishwasher, plump up cushions etc. In 5 minutes you can normally make a room look presentable. In another five mins you can run a hoover around the main parts of the room and give it a quick swipe with polish too.

pizzaobsessed · 12/04/2021 22:33

@Pickle2828

To put on a duvet cover... Start with it inside out, put your hands inside to the corners and grab the duvet and covers, then shake the cover down to inside out it over the duvet. Done in a fraction of the time!
Yes! I learned this at about 11/12 on a school trip and I still do it now
maggiethecat · 12/04/2021 22:38

I'm in the tidy as you go camp and rarely do marathon cleans (do I ever? Confused)

Recently bought a mini chopper as I got tired of wearing swimming goggles when chopping onions. Best thing ever - it's small enough to sit on the kitchen counter plugged in and onions etc are prepped in under 10 secs.

Also, rarely ever cook a single use meal - try to increase quantities so there's enough left for at least one other family meal, takes practically the same amount of time.

SouthOfFrance · 12/04/2021 22:39

What is the Roblox hack?

Also, whereabouts do you rub the 2p coin on limescale taps, do you mean where tbe water comes out or on the metal bits?

I love whoever said save yourself time in the evenings by making the packed lunches in the mornings you are my type of person!

NoseOfJericho · 12/04/2021 22:40

I stitch a little line or cross on the end of flat sheets (all my sheets are flat ones) so that I know which is the 'long' side.
