When does period return after having baby?

Hi,

My DS is 13 months and my periods haven't returned yet, is this normal? I remember it being much earlier with my first son. I'm still breastfeeding but he only wants milk in the night.

The short answer is it can be. It is so variable there isn’t a right time for them to start again, although it is normally as breastfeeding reduces. Some find it’s not until breastfeeding stops completely. Check with your health visitor next time you see them.

Mine came back after about a year both times and I breastfed but only once a day once they got to about a year old

18 months for me with DS1 and 4 months with DS2. Totally random

Agree it really varies. Almost 2 years with number 1. Less than a year with number 2. Typical as I wanted a second child but not a third!

Mine came back after 5 months and DS was still EBF at the time.

15 months with DS1 and 12 months with DS2.

A lot of people seem to be of the opinion that they tend to return when the night feeds reduce a decent amount. I think I broadly agree with this.

Mine came back after 15 months but are abit irregular still ( DD 19 months old)
My Dc also still has at least one feed during the night and usually 2 times during the day.

4 weeks pp.
Ebf and still came back!!
Was gutted tbh!

With DD1 it was after 6 months and she was formula fed!

I got well over a year off with ds1 but only about 6 months with ds2.

Ds2 was a better sleeper so that might have been a reason.

It's completely random. With my one who was ff, I never got my periods back even 5 months pp when I went back on the pill. With my one who was ebf, bf every 1-2 hours, around the clock, never even had a bottle of expressed milk, they came back like clockwork at 3 months pp.

DD1 7 months, DD2 4 months, DS (poor neglected 3rd child) can't remember. All EBF to 6 months. I know people whose periods haven't come until they dropped the final feed at age 3 and those that have got pregnant within a few weeks of giving birth. It's very variable.

Mine have only just returned as I stopped BF (1yr). I noticed a lot of things returned when I stopped, general mood, sex drive etc.

@Aprilshowersandhail Same here - twice! Equally gutted.

Mine took 7 months and I never Bf so I think it can just take longer for some!

My child is 1 year old. Twice I've thought my periods were coming back but it was just a day of light spotting on wiping. Once at 6 months and once a few weeks ago. I'm breastfeeding once in the morning and once before bed now.

I agree with this. My first two babies stopped feeding at night at about 7/8 months and my periods returned at about 10 months. With my third, she carried on night feeding until about two years old. My period returned at about 14 months.

P. S. It took a while for the cycles to be regular though.
