How do you apply your foundation?

Basic I know but I feel like I don't have a good method. This is my current routine but hoping some more experienced posters might be able to give me some tips.

Cleanse
Vit c
Moisturise
SPF

Then I just apply Double Wear very quickly to my face. I don't think I do a very good job and it takes me about 2 minutes. Combination skin.

What do I do differently?

I dot it on my face after moisturiser and use either a damp make up sponge or brush to blend

Crunched · 10/04/2021 22:52

I do my spf last, and give each process a chance to be absorbed before I apply the next product.

Starlitexpress · 10/04/2021 22:55

Just started using a brush, got a cheap one off amazon. It's been a game changer, much better, even coverage and seems to last longer.

bonfireheart · 10/04/2021 23:00

my routine is cleanser, serum and moisturiser. put my foundation on with a brush and then go over it with a sponge. Let everything absorb and then spray SPF on.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 10/04/2021 23:03

MOT then concrete!

violetbunny · 10/04/2021 23:14

I cleanse, then apply a hydration serum and moisturiser (Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face base, which is excellent - especially under longwear makeup). Apply SPF then let it all sink in for a few mins.

I apply primer, then use a damp Beautyblender to apply foundation. With a high coverage foundation like Doublewear a sponge or brush is essential for getting even coverage.

I also apply eye cream just before I apply concealer.

lms2017 · 10/04/2021 23:21

Dot round face use a damp beauty blender to "stipple" it on. Or use a huge foundation brush not the flat type . One that looks like a blush brush X

EasterBunny21 · 10/04/2021 23:22

My skincare isn’t great tbh.

I use Clinique Moisture Surge Intense moisturiser then give it 5/10 mins.
Dab on green anti redness primer with the blunt end of my damp beauty blender.
Wait.
Pore filling primer on nose and the wrinkle between my eyebrows.
Wait.
M&S Hydrating Primer all over.
Wait.
Apply foundation ‘roughly’ with one of those flat paintbrush style brushes then dab dab dab dab dab dab dab lightly with beauty blender to work it in to the skin.
A spritz of Mac Fix+
Powder on nose and forehead only.

I don’t like just using a brush. The flat ones you end up with brushstrokes and stubby stippling ones you end up with stipple marks. I think whatever you use finish it off with a damp beauty blender.

getyourfreakon · 10/04/2021 23:31

Wash face, use primer, then concealer as necessary, then foundation with clean fingers. Powder on top. Thick black eye make up and setting spray or hairspray to set. Works for me.

Rina66 · 10/04/2021 23:38

I don't like too many products layered, so I mix them all together instead!
I start with Elemis marine cream moisturiser, leave for 5 mins.
Then mix double wear with Iconic illuminator and EL advanced night repair - apply with a stipple brush then dab with a blender sponge.
Brush on Beauty Pie One Powder Wonder.

I've recently watched a make up demo on Instagram where Iconic Get Set Glow was sprayed on after make up - I'm seriously considering getting some, it looked great.

Anordinarymum · 11/04/2021 00:11

I wash my face, splash it with cold water and dry. I add moisturiser and let it sit on my skin before adding liquid foundation with my fingers. I like doing it this way as I know I cover everywhere and it works for me.

I add blusher with a brush and eye make-up if i feel like it.

I only do what I like doing and not what I have been told to do by experts.
It always looks ok and that's enough for me.

DareIask · 11/04/2021 03:54

Serum
Eye cream
Moisturiser
Concealer on large scar
Dot foundation and blend with sponge.

Hydrate · 11/04/2021 04:01

Try giving your moisturiser 10 minutes to absorb, it seems to make a difference.

Edit. Try giving your moisturiser and sunscreen 10 minutes to absorb, it seems to make a difference. Then use your foundation.

I invested in Chanel fluid/powder foundation brush n101 and it's reallllly worth the money.

For skincare I use a range of The Ordinary products and rotate them depending on how my skin feels. So it's either oil (rosehip or retinol) if skin is dry, or water-based for normal feeling skin (hyaluronic acid+B5 or "buffet), or niacinamide+zinc if my skin is blemish-y, or caffeine solution 5% if my skin is tired/puffy.

Those ordinary products have made my skin really good and they're such good value

thatsgotit · 11/04/2021 04:42

Brush, straight after moisturiser (and primer if I'm using it that day, often I CBAd but it does make a big difference imho). It took me ages to get on board with foundation brushes as I used to think you had to paint the foundation on with them, whereas what you need to be doing is buffing it into the skin. I get the best finish like this now I've got the technique sorted. (Can't get on with sponges at all even though so many people swear by them!)

KoalaOok · 11/04/2021 05:06

Buffing brush. I used to use a sponge but found a brush works quicker for me.

Therewereroses · 11/04/2021 05:21

These days I don't apply makeup as have no need to.

When working I was in the shower and had either a flannel (clean every day) with Simple cream cleanser or I used Clinique 7 day scrub - depended on how late I was getting out of bed. Out of the shower, dried face first and put on Clinique 72 hour moisturiser - left at least 5 mins before doing makeup. Dried self off and then had a stipple brush I think it's called? Again something I bought off Clinique. I used a foundation called Clinique Even Better Glow. I worked in the city and never saw the light of day so I don't think that any of my products had SPF. I needed any sunlight I got! When working I used to wear their clear moisturiser that's supposed to protect you from pollutants or something. I was a sucker for the Clinique sales staff. It does work well on my skin. Had I earned a bit more, I'd have been a Lancome fan.

Shower, cleanse, moisturiser, leave for 5 mins, foundation.

Going on a date or something I added a radiant primer between the moisturiser and foundation but I didn't have time for that when working.

Therewereroses · 11/04/2021 05:22

Oh and bronzer powder on my neck and lightly over face so that it looked like my natural colour. And Primark tanning thing on arms and face/neck. Gosh, I've forgotten the lengths I went to! I had it down to a fine art!

Moonlight22 · 11/04/2021 06:36

Crikey, the only time I wear any sort of makeup is when we’re “going out” Never wear anything, maybe a smidge of nivea on a dry bit if there is one.No good at doing makeup I look like a clown 🤡

indy2please · 11/04/2021 06:50

Does your moisturiser not have an spf already?

hiptobeasquare · 11/04/2021 08:45

@Moonlight22 Why are you posting on this thread then? The OP is asking how people apply foundation. We don’t need to hear about how you never wear make up, as if we are doing something wrong by wearing it everyday. I don’t go onto posts about weight loss and write “crikey, I never watch what I eat. I just have whatever I fancy.”
And OP- I just use my fingers for some foundations and a real techniques brush for other. For double wear though I like a beauty blender. :)

bonfireheart · 11/04/2021 09:33

@hiptobeasquare there's always one who thinks they're better than everyone cos they use a dishcloth on their face and claims yo still look great. Good for them. I find it upsetting/annoying...have struggled all my life with my skin despite eating well, staying hydrated, looking after my skin...
But tbh I am pretty sure that these people's skin doesn't look as great as they claim

TheChosenTwo · 11/04/2021 09:45

I don’t have the knack of using a beauty blender or any other sponge! It just doesn’t go on right at all for me and I’ve tried with different foundations too, I’m just a bit Cack-handed!
I use the real techniques foundation brush, a light smear of foundation and then just buff - literally takes me about 30 seconds to spread as I really use a tiny bit to smooth out the small amount redness on my cheeks, I don’t really take it onto my forehead either as I end up feeling like I’m wearing a mask.
I look after my skin, it’s not perfect, suffer with hormonal breakouts and then scarring because I’m a picker etc but I’m fastidious with my skincare. The makeup side of things I tend to be quite quick and haphazard with but I look more polished and groomed with it on and I feel better when I take the 2 minutes it takes me to do what I consider a ‘full face’.
I’m not a daily makeup wearer, don’t often bother at the weekends but for work I mostly do.
Get yourself on the s&b board if you want to have a browse at loads of threads on this if you’re interested, it’s an education!

Mumblechum0 · 11/04/2021 09:54

Can I ask you lovely ladies who sound like you know your stuff, I’m late 50s and use a tinted moisturiser everyday, but I want my skin to look a bit glowy/shiny rather than Matt. Is there anything you can recommend please?

Sorry for hijack
