How do you apply your foundation?

Basic I know but I feel like I don't have a good method. This is my current routine but hoping some more experienced posters might be able to give me some tips.

Cleanse
Vit c
Moisturise
SPF

Then I just apply Double Wear very quickly to my face. I don't think I do a very good job and it takes me about 2 minutes. Combination skin.

What do I do differently?

@Mumblechum0

Can I ask you lovely ladies who sound like you know your stuff, I’m late 50s and use a tinted moisturiser everyday, but I want my skin to look a bit glowy/shiny rather than Matt. Is there anything you can recommend please?

Sorry for hijack

Try giorgio armani luminous silk foundation 🙂 very light and silky feel too

I can recommend the Clinique Even Better Glow foundation (it has nothing glowy in it, it's just quite moist and dewy). I'd recommend going to a few different makeup counters in a large Boots or department store like John Lewis I think on Oxford Steet? They'll have all the large brands and staff there. Tell them that you want a dewy complexion. They will try to sell you a cleanser, toner, moisturiser, a tap for your kitchen sink that keeps dripping and perhaps a pair of knickers, but humour them and then take what you want. Lancome is a really good range but a little out of my price range so I've never bought their products, just had samples (really bloody good). Clinique is good and has the matt effect ones and the other one I've mentioned which gives a more moist finish.

I once went to a salon somewhere in Mayfair for a facial. They analysed my skin age and told me I was 4 years older than I was, then when yer one was giving me the facial she kept telling me how shite my skin was and all about their expensive treatments. I left there needing therapy.

Facial-wise, a professional facial at a local salon can be good. Once a month or so. You can also buy face masks (only get the moisturising ones unless you're 16) and do those at home.
Vit C is good. A good diet, loads of sleep, exercise, water and no alcohol are recommended. Or you could die.

Go in dressed up, looking like you own the place and say that your current skincare regime isn't giving you the desired results and that you would like a foundation which has a silk rather than a matte finish.

They'll be helping you out no bother! If you're not happy and you feel like they're shoving something onto you, just move onto the next counter.

Veronika - I want to buy that just from the name lol

Therewereroses · 11/04/2021 10:29

Take a day off work to go in when they're not busy. Don't go in on the weekend. You won't have peace and they'll be rushed.

Therewereroses · 11/04/2021 10:32

Is your skin soft as it is Mumblechum0 ? or do you have dry patches? If you've soft even skin, any foundation will look good. Certainly, the Clinique one is moisturising throughout the day. It's the only one I've used for a few years, so I don't even know what else is out there.

TableNiner · 11/04/2021 10:33

If you don’t have time/interest in applying foundation, you could try switching to something more forgiving so a tinted moisturiser like
Nars Radiant Tinted Moisturiser
Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue
Eborian BB cream
Trinny London BFF
Plus plenty of others

bonfireheart · 11/04/2021 10:34

Every foundation except Clinique dries my face.

Therewereroses · 11/04/2021 10:37

With the Even Better Glow foundation, I always finish with a very light coat of powder (literally float over face with brush with bronzer on) just to set it. I've bought setting sprays since and have literally not worn makeup in a year so haven't had a chance to try it out!

dopeyduck · 11/04/2021 10:39

You need to leave moisturiser / SPF for 10/15 mins then apply foundation with a brush.

It could be that whatever you're using under it is too wet / slippy / oily - what are you using.

Double wear is a hardy foundation that lasts so you shouldn't be having issues.

Therewereroses · 11/04/2021 10:48

I like Clinique too. I never remove makeup at night (hence the face scrub or flannel to wash yesterday off the next morning in the shower!), so I like the ones which have moisturising elements built into the foundations. I know that makes me sound horrific, but fuck, I'm too tired after a days work/commute etc./shite/stress/home/cooking/observing the cleaning that needs to be done but not doing it. I'm a grub. I choose my foundation to account for that (and change my pillowcases regularly lol)

The Clinique 7 day scrub is a really really soft cleanser for your face. Like a pp I find a lot of things dry my skin out. Despite its name, it is really moisturising as a cleanser. You don't get that dry 'shit, where is my moisturiser before my face cracks' feeling after using it. It's expensive for a cleanser but it's a good start I find. They now want to load you up with serums and moisturisers and then foundations and setting sprays and whatever. If what you've found that you like is a tinted moisturiser, go in and ask for a dewy/silky (they have different words to describe it) tinted moisturiser!

Therewereroses · 11/04/2021 10:57

I know that some people like spa days. I love nothing more than a day off work, go into somewhere and try out all the skincare, get advice, get lunch somewhere I wouldn't normally eat, go back, depending on how the moisturiser still feels or whatever, and then buy what I want. It's my version of a spa day. If only I could add in a reflexology session at the end, I'd be on top of the world. After a bit of browsing through accessories I've a ban on buying clothes as I've no more room left for them Shoes are also banned. I'm allowed to look. I'm allowed to even touch. But I am not allowed to bring anything home. This is entirely self imposed as my two wardrobes now won't close.
Oh but to dream of the freedoms we once had!

Isababybel · 11/04/2021 11:10

Do you apply it with your fingers? Try using a damp beauty blender, it makes it so easy to apply it evenly and blend it all out.

Therewereroses · 11/04/2021 11:12

Oh and another tip! I always wear a base of fake tan (I use the primark one and apply it daily with a mitt). It's called St. Moriz and I am not lying when I tell you that people think that I'm actually naturally tanned (it's also really moisturising and I use that on my face after the moisturiser too, I had just forgotten!). I also buy the tanning mitts in Primark though you can get the same ones in Boots for twice the price, but they're the same thing. They're about £2 each in Primark and £4 in Boots. Given that Primark isn't open yet I think, you're probably confined to Boots. It's a foam mouse thing and just spread it well and rub the streaks out and it's a really good cheap!! tan.

If you do wear a base tan, make sure that you have that on you when you go in, otherwise they'll try to sell you something 4 shades too light as they WILL match to your skin tone despite your protestations that you always wear fake tan.

That's my host of skincare tips for now as I look in the mirror and assess my age as that of a 70 year old and begin to weep.

Therewereroses · 11/04/2021 11:15

OP, my suggestion is that you're loading on too much under the foundation so the foundation is essentially slipping over the layer of 'grease/oil/moisturiser/SPF' Does it not spread properly? You're layering on a lot of products there. If you can imagine applying a layer of sudocrem and then trying to apply foundation over that, can you see what you're doing? You need a more absorbent moisturiser which 'can be used as a base for foundation'. What is this Vit C and SPF that you're using?

Bluesheep8 · 11/04/2021 11:25

MOT then concrete!

Eh?

AbstractHeart · 11/04/2021 11:30

Current routine:
Vit C cleanser (in morning shower)
Cerave moisturiser (contains hyaluronic acid)
Max factor 3in1 foundation (primer, concealer and foundation, plus SPF 20) Applied with my fingers

I like keeping it simple and this works for me.

Yubaba · 11/04/2021 11:39

I usually cleanse, moisturise, SPF50 then prime.
I use either No7 serum foundation or the Fenty hydrating foundation. I apply with a sponge because I can’t get an even coverage with a brush it always ends up smeared.

EventuallyDistracted · 11/04/2021 11:40

Cleanse in the shower
Tiny dot of moisturiser
Get dressed
SPF (Ultrasun)
Brush hair
Dot on foundation / tinted moisturiser and rub in with fingertips.

Only works if there are no dry patches though, I use a flannel to remove cleanser and exfoliate once a fortnight or so.

QueenPaw · 11/04/2021 11:44

I have dry skin (using prescription tret)
So I do a serum (usually vitamin c or a hydrating one) and moisturiser plus SPF
Then I do eye makeup so everything has chance to sink in and I can wipe away any fall out
Damp real techniques sponge and foundation and then the rest of my makeup

Arrierttyclock · 11/04/2021 11:53

I cleanse, tone, moisturise, Estée Lauder primer then use my beauty blender to put on foundation. I use to use or brush or even my hands but I loooooove my sponge it's amazing

Mumblechum0 · 11/04/2021 12:00

Wow I love you all!!!

Going to go to JL tomorrow and get myself sorted. I do usually use a Space NK one which is the right colour but still a bit matte but ran out at the start of lockdown.

My skin is soft but I have horrendous frown lines, and am scared of fillers.

Thanks again, I rarely come onto this section of MN, it’s much nicer than aibu 😘😂

Moonlight22 · 11/04/2021 12:44

Hiptobesquare , I thought foundation was makeup? And please dont assume I am saying there is something wrong with other people wearing makeup. At no point did I say this or that my skin was perfect.
🙂

VerityWibbleWobble · 11/04/2021 13:01

Having properly hydrated skin is key to getting Double Wear right and looking natural.

So I use an angled foundation brush, squirt foundation on my hand, do two layers on my face and then go over with a damp beauty blender to get rid of any stray brushstrokes.

I always use a factor 50 spf under foundation too because I use tretinoin.

hiptobeasquare · 11/04/2021 14:44

@Moonlight22

You said “Never wear anything, maybe a smidge of nivea on a dry bit if there is one.”

So why comment on the thread at all then if you don’t wear anything if the OP is looking for foundation help?

dudsville · 11/04/2021 14:49

I have dry skin, so after after all the first bit of your routine I then put a little something like EA8HR "cream" on my hands, then foundation, and apply it like another lotion.
