The BBC have been overwhelmed with complaints about coverage of Prince Philip

Showing the same thing on 2 channels simultaneously.

Now you just enter your email to complain as they couldn’t cope with the amount of complaints.

Anyone seen the programming for the weekend? I see they are still screening film of the DOE today.

Roussette · 10/04/2021 16:00

It's one day out of 365. One day for history buffs

That may be so. But any reason why the same programme should be shown on both BBC1 and 2, and 4 pulled?

It makes me sad as an American that someone would complain about this. When 911 happened it was on for weeks and if someone didn't want to watch there is an off button on the tv. This man may have been privileged but he is the Queens husband, show some respect.
91/1 actually impacted people's lives and led to war. It's something which will be taught in schools for centuries to come.

This, on the other hand, is one old person dying.

Not even remotely in the same league.

I don't really see it as a historical event. The history books will record that Prince Philip passed away on 9th April 2021 and at best give a paragraph about serving as the Queen's consort for the longest period.

Kpo58 · 10/04/2021 16:01

The dedicated BBC Prince Philip Coverage complaint site seems to have disappeared. Maybe even it got overwhelmed?

I can understand having BBC1 and a radio station dedicated to the coverage of this event, but pulling the rest of the network is rather excessive. How many times are people ment to watch the same program over and over?

HereBeFuckery · 10/04/2021 16:03

@Roussette

You don't want to watch. Lots of people do. You go and do something else, and the people who want to can watch

But how can they watch 4 channels at once? 2 of which were the BBC showing the same coverage simultaneously.
That's my point

You're being facile. People have favourite channels - I don't like the news on ITV, for example. Two channels had the identical coverage, not all of them. So what? If BBC 2 had had different coverage, some mealy mouthed person would be complaining at the expense of producing two different broadcasts.

This is the point that is being consistently missed by the "it's only one day just read a book" crowd.

Nobody is saying there shouldn't be coverage. Just that it's ridiculous that the BBC has ground to a halt when it comes to reporting anything else or showing anything else.

Last night 5 BBC channes were showing the same documentry tribute thing. There is just no need for that AT ALL.

I’m not sure how else to explain enforced coverage of something which is not wanted other than ‘hijacking’ 🤔

And too right I’m using emotive language- it’s bloody appalling. The BBC is letting us all know our place with enforced grieving.

Viewing figures dropped by 60% , the Beeb couldn’t handle the complaints. Doesn’t that say something? Suspending Channel 4 and indoctrinating children’s tv. That’s not propaganda?!

Not wanted BY YOU. You are one person. I did want it. So our views cancel one another out. Do you see now how misnaming something you don't like 'hijacking' is tabloid-speak?
Mysterian · 10/04/2021 16:04

Complaints link has been removed. Trying to keep the numbers down by making it harder.

Exactly. Yes, it's very sad for his family and for royal supporters, I'm sure. But this is an extremely elderly (and unwell I think?) royal consort passing away. Not exactly Twin Towers or Bloody Sunday levels of noteworthiness.

'Enforced'? You had armed security in your sitting room forcing you to watch at gunpoint? Give over.

@cateycloggs

Another pleb scum here, I have complained to the BBC about the complete removal of BBC4 and Radio4Extra from theschedules. I have never complained that the vast majority of BBC out put or practically all Freeview channels have content that does not suit my taste. I cannot afford any subscription channel (another plebby point, I think), I cannot go out often, I spend about 75% of my time alone in silence, am I wrong to expect the national broadcasting service not to cut off me as a licence payer when the same information is being broadcast on several channels? I note that BBC1 and 2 are managing to broadcast different sports, Radio4 and 4Extra apparantly cannot broadcast different speech based programmes. Hence my complaint is not unreasonable.
Isn't Freeview - free? Surely BBCiplayer, ITV hub, my5 and All4 are too.

I don't have Sky (and wouldn't want it), but there is plenty on Freeview channels, ITV3, etc, and there was yesterday.

Flipping heck, it was only yesterday that the Duke died. Goodness knows what will happen when the Queen goes.

I saw two different programmes about Prince Philip yesterday and both were extremely interesting, one I might watch again which was on Channel 4 in the afternoon.

UrAWizHarry · 10/04/2021 16:06

"Two channels"

Five channels yesterday. BB1, BB2, BBC Scotland, BBC News, BBC Parliament. With great whacking banners on CBBC etc.

user1471439310 · 10/04/2021 16:06

CokeDrinker did anything happen to that stupid mom who sent her kids to school? How awful to just think of yourself.

Roussette · 10/04/2021 16:06

How on earth is it facile to say that to broadcast the same programme at the same time on two BBC channels is ridiculous?

LyndaSnellsSniff · 10/04/2021 16:06

I'm not a Royalist or anything, but seriously, what do people expect?!
He's a senior Royal, it's to be expected.
It was exactly the same when Princess Diana died, wall to wall coverage, I'm old enough to remember it well - so what's different this time?
Bloody social media, far more easy for everyone to whinge and moan lol

I think the difference is that PP was a very old man, ill and had recently undergone surgery. His death was expected. Diana was young and healthy and had 2 young children. Her death was shockingly unexpected so was a major news story.

canigooutyet · 10/04/2021 16:07

And cbbc or whatever had the same banner as BBC 4 to turn over to whatever to watch an important news broadcast.

If mine were still at that age, they would have prefered to carry on watching tellietubbies or whatever.

cateycloggs · 10/04/2021 16:10

I would say I am semi-elderly, I have iplayer and access to all other catch up channels, I know how to operate them, I looked last night there was nothing I wanted to watch. Fair enough, I have niche tastes , there is very often nothing that suits me or my mood, I do not usually complain about that. Why is it so hard to realise it is the complete removal of certain channels from the BBC for which we pay a licence fee that is being compained about. As far as I know there has been no explanationof why this has been done (just checked Radio4Extra still as Radio4 , no explanation) or even statement when the missing channels will be restored. Do you think that is reasonable?

Tealightsandd · 10/04/2021 16:10

@roussette
The same question could be asked for the FA Cup or major political events. I think most recently, the US presidential elections (or was it ours). I can't remember which, but do remember coverage across all the news channels, BBC1, and some others. Mostly repetitive and boring since very little happened for hours whilst waiting for results. Journalists resorted to interviewing each other to pass the time. At least yesterday was an interesting history lesson.

Yes, it was a mark of respect to the husband of our Head of State, but it was only one day and it was a wonderful opportunity for some really interesting history.

@MarshaBradyo There's more to the radio than BBC. Lots of digital channels available. Alternative options include services like Spotify or a podcast, or for the less tech inclined old fashioned physical vinyl, cassette, or CD.

Mojoj · 10/04/2021 16:12

And you're surprised because...? BBC is Government sponsored propaganda. Nothing else.

ArtemisiaGentle · 10/04/2021 16:12

I don't watch a lot of live TV anymore. Bbc news is now so banal I can't watch it without getting irrationally annoyed. Philip's death turned up on my Twitter TL (thanks, Larry the No 10 Cat) and I thought, oh, that's sad but not unexpected and carried on with my day. I didn't feel the need to turn the tv on and watch repetitive films about the man all day.

RubyFowler · 10/04/2021 16:13

Not wanted BY YOU. You are one person. I did want it.

@HereBeFuckery can you explain why you wanted the exact same programme shown on BBC 1 and 2 all evening as well as all the rest? Because I genuinely don't understand why you wouldn't be happy with the Duke of Edinburgh stuff on BBC 1 and the BBC 1 schedule bumped to BBC 2? What would have been wrong with that?

TooOldandTired · 10/04/2021 16:14

It's once in 99 years FFS what is wrong with people. even if you only have Freeview there are multiple other channels to watch. What is wrong in your life that you feel the need to complain about 1/2 a days programming.

Tealightsandd · 10/04/2021 16:14

If anyone wants to counter balance the complaints, the BBC has a simple online feedback form. You can use it for positive as well as negative feedback.

Roussette · 10/04/2021 16:15

Tealight No not the same. Never have they broadcast exactly the same programme on BBC1 and 2.

As I've said a million times, I have no problem with the coverage for however long on BBC. Well deserved, and I am sure it is interesting history for many.

But no one has yet answered why there was more than 9 hours of the same programming running concurrently on the two main BBC channels.
FA cup on BBC1 and 2? Nope. Never happened
