Well its gonna happen. We all knew that.

Most have Sky/Netflix so find something else watch or go for a walk.

@IstandwithJackieWeaver

I wasn't in the UK when Diana died so don't know what that was like. I do think having blanket coverage across the BBC network was too much. As a pp posted, he was 99 and in poor health. I did a gym session and went for a shower and Radio2 had Ken Bruce playing MoR fairly bland music instead of Sara Cox's uplifting pop.
Wall to wall coverage. I spent the day gardening to get away from it.

For someone who was born in the year 2000 a man who is 80 years older might not mean much to the millenials
Probably means nothing at all to them.
A bit like when the duke of Windsor died in 1972 and I was 20.
However the great scandal he caused when he abdicated was very newsworthy.
At the end of the day it’s a slice of history but in our fast paced life now it probably does come across as very boring.
It’s just reminiscent of a different era.
His early life was very interesting though.

We don’t put the tv on, haven’t for a year as we’re sick of the covid drivel and I thought I’ll bite and put it on and there’s bloody Theresa may rabbiting on about what it’s like having a Philip in her life.
Jeez, it didn’t last more than 30 seconds before it got switched back off again.
It’s time we stopped paying our oplicence.
Apparently loads of people are doing this.

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 10/04/2021 09:17

I don’t realise so many people still watched live tv.

Jellycatspyjamas · 10/04/2021 09:17

Given the endless sad sack stuff when Diana died, I’m ok with it tbh, I can watch something else if need be, when she died I was stuck on a boat on the Norfolk broads with the radio for company - no getting away from it. He’s done more and for considerably longer so in terms of tribute a day or two of changes programmes and sad songs doesn’t bother me in the slightest.

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 10/04/2021 09:17

*didn’t

Temp023 · 10/04/2021 09:18

What I want to know is why the Midlands/ North don’t get a salute. Are there no big guns north of Watford and south of Edinburgh?
Discrimination!

Bordois · 10/04/2021 09:22

Couldn't even escape on cbeebies with the big black banner popping up on screen every 5 minutes 🤦🏼‍♀️

WrinklesShminkles · 10/04/2021 09:23

@StillCoughingandLaughing

It seems reports of the death of terrestrial TV have been greatly exaggerated. Apparently there’s absolutely nothing to watch because the main channels are covering this.

Forget Netflix or Prime - doesn’t everyone have Freeview now? Isn’t it impossible to watch terrestrial television without it? There are dozens of channels to choose from.

Not here. I have a tiny handful of FV channels because topography means the aerials in this neighbourhood can't pick Freeview up (it's a Leeds suburb FFS). Between lockdown and the TV companies' collective idiocy, I feel sorry for those of my neighbours who can't afford Sky, Netflix etc.

Maybe be a little less smug?

BertieBotts · 10/04/2021 09:28

They've always done same coverage on 2 channels when it's been breaking news/nationally important news like 9/11, a royal death etc. Hardly a new phenomenon.

Slipperfairy · 10/04/2021 09:31

We have the radio on pretty much constantly. There's no escape there though. Radio 6 appear to have found the 'dirge' playlist and are going full on. I need a bit of get up and go on a Saturday morning.

Annamariefl · 10/04/2021 09:32

It was possibly so people coming in from work at different times could catch up. We watched some and watched other stuff in between eg sky plus, Netflix - it was very easy to do so make plans for next Saturday so you aren’t caught out again.

Thefaceofboe · 10/04/2021 09:43

I really don’t know why people are surprised at this.

reesewithoutaspoon · 10/04/2021 09:47

I just switched the tv off. I expected wall to wall coverage going over every trivial bit if info about his life. Dont think it will end there will be specials then endless news pieces discussing which people will attend the funeral and what the funeral will be like and what royal protocol will be followed then the endless coverage in the days leading up to the funeral and then the funeral itself.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 10/04/2021 10:01

Maybe be a little less smug?

‘Smug’? It’s hardly ‘smug’ to note that the vast majority of people have Freeview.

KeflavikAirport · 10/04/2021 10:02

Every trivial bit of his life except for the bits that are callous and racist.

GlutenFreeGingerCake · 10/04/2021 10:08

My Gran is 98 and not anti Royal at all but she was annoyed they cancelled the final of Masterchef. I just think it's the 24 hour a day wall-to-wall coverage that is unnecessary. I quite like the idea of a midday gun salute from naval bases and ships at sea, a nice obituary on the news and a quiet family funeral it seems more in keeping with the man himself than all this hoo-ha.

99victoria · 10/04/2021 10:21

I usually have radio 2 on all day but today they're playing Sad Music only and the bloody Whispery Sad voices of the presenters is doing my head in.
Time to dig out the CD collection!

Happylittlethoughts · 10/04/2021 10:27

I think it's inappropriate in this century. A man (not very nice man) of mo relevance to most of this nation. Roll on the Republic.

TSSDNCOP · 10/04/2021 10:51

It is comments like this that lean me toward hoping that day doesn't come.

It was a lovely day and evening yesterday to escape outside and off the TV, read a book, play with the children. Is it possible in this century we have so few resources that the re-direction of the terrestrial BBC for a day left us with literally nothing else to do.

TroysMammy · 10/04/2021 10:52

It was worse when Princess Diana died.

Vintagevixen · 10/04/2021 10:57

Yes it's totally over the top IMO. As when anyone dies I appreciate it's sad for the family. But Playing sad music on the radio and cancelling programming - ridiculous.

Up the republic!

ILoveAfternoonTea · 10/04/2021 11:02

A ninety nine year old has died, hardly a shock

In a couple of days it will all be forgotten about

Keepthechangeyafilthyanimal1 · 10/04/2021 11:06

I’ve complained to the BBC and to Ofcom.
