... and how long is it going to go on for?

I completely understand ah it's being done but it needs to be limited. End of the day - yes he's important but he was a massive misogynistic racist and I begrudge so much time being focused on him.
Can't wait to see what actual important news the government try to bury over the next week whilst the media focus on him. Keep your eyes fixed on the smaller columns/ not the front pages. They will bury some very very important things this week. (I have journalists in my family - this is a common tactic)

UseYourIllusion · 09/04/2021 23:08

I put planet rock on in the kitchen for the dog earlier when I went out. They were playing Fleetwood Mac, Albatross.
When I got home two hours later it was on again when I walked through the door.

I’m guessing there is a small number of rock songs acceptable for mourning. I did feel a bit sorry for the dog though.

I thought it made a very refreshing change from all the covid coverage

BlatheringOn · 09/04/2021 23:20

I'm a bit taken aback by the gushing. (If I had only realised before that he was Superman, Einstein and Mother Theresa rolled into one).

KingdomScrolls · 09/04/2021 23:23

They cancelled the MasterChef final for the same footage they've not only been showing all day, but that was airing on two channels simultaneously. Why?? He's dead, it's very sad, put a memorial programme or two on fair enough, but he was almost 100 and in ill health. It's hardly a shock or unusual circumstances. It's also strikes me as the kind of fluff and nonsense he really wasn't a fan of. He's not even having a state funeral.

mooonstone · 09/04/2021 23:23

Has anyone been out today? Allllll the billboards and electronic displays in my city have his face on them now. Seems a sweet gesture, but kind of unnerving once there’s 20 visible at all times in your radius

RoseRedRoseBlue · 09/04/2021 23:29

@UseYourIllusion 😂😂😂

RichardMarxisinnocent · 09/04/2021 23:32

Does nobody on here have Freeview? Once you get past BBC1, BBC2 ITV and I assume the news channels there are plenty of other channels not showing anything to do with Prince Philip. And if you have iPlayer or All4 or ITV Hub or whatever it's called you have a huge amount more choice. It's a million times better than 1997 when Diana died and we only have 5 channels.

purplebatbear · 09/04/2021 23:49

1997 was utterly batshit crazy. Watching people lose their minds over someone they'd never met was just insane. Yes, it was very very sad but the level of upset people went to was just ridiculous.

Ironfloor269 · 09/04/2021 23:51

Thank goodness for Netflix and Amazon Prime. That's all we've watched today.

Leapyleaffrog · 09/04/2021 23:54

I think the BBC/the people who plan this stuff overestimate the mourning the nation will do. It’s sad, it absolutely should have broken into the daytime tv schedule for a bit and it’s entirely reasonable to show some tribute shows. But most of us aren’t really going to spend 8 days, or even 8 hours, mourning a 99 year old man we never met who died quietly at home after an amazing life. Especially after the real tragedies of the past year. I hope after tonight that tv (and most other normal life) will carry on, with probably another day on Saturday for the funeral. It doesn’t need a media circus and I really don’t understand why government needs to be practically suspended for a week. I think that would be ridiculous even for the actual Monarch.

x2boys · 10/04/2021 00:02

It's even worse on CNN I have been watching the Chauvin trial for the past couple of weeks on CNN ,they also had rolling coverage of prince phillip, for hours plusbl lots of gushing about how devastated the British public are.

BigBlueDog · 10/04/2021 00:37

They're not showing the Masters golf, the dirty feckers.

boatyardblues · 10/04/2021 00:40

I listened to the news on the way home from work. I’ve spent my evening watching a boxset on Netflix. Not a single mention of Prince Philip. Problem solved. 🤷‍♀️

Rummikub · 10/04/2021 00:51

@bonbonours

I'm just amazed how many people actually watch live TV. We literally only ever watch stuff on catch up or Netflix. We choose stuff we want to watch, never ever whatever happens to be on.
Don’t have Netflix etc Cannot afford it

So yes it was frustrating that both bbc 1 and 2 had the same content,
Unnecessary imo

AnotherSunrise · 10/04/2021 01:14

Agreed it is way over the top showing on every channel
What about MasterChef final!

Anystarinthesky · 10/04/2021 01:52

I watched the announcement at midday.

I've been watching Netflix.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 10/04/2021 01:59

It seems reports of the death of terrestrial TV have been greatly exaggerated. Apparently there’s absolutely nothing to watch because the main channels are covering this.

Forget Netflix or Prime - doesn’t everyone have Freeview now? Isn’t it impossible to watch terrestrial television without it? There are dozens of channels to choose from.

RickiTarr · 10/04/2021 02:06

@Myopionisjustified

Stop moaning and put Netflix on, I recommend the crown, 😆
I’ve been watching The Windsors. Grin
Billandben444 · 10/04/2021 07:38

Watch Free view.

IstandwithJackieWeaver · 10/04/2021 07:51

I wasn't in the UK when Diana died so don't know what that was like. I do think having blanket coverage across the BBC network was too much. As a pp posted, he was 99 and in poor health. I did a gym session and went for a shower and Radio2 had Ken Bruce playing MoR fairly bland music instead of Sara Cox's uplifting pop.

Brahumbug · 10/04/2021 08:01

When we heard the news, my DH said "well, that's tv fucked for today ", thank god for Netflix!

fizbosshoes · 10/04/2021 08:10

Like PP have said I cant see the point if the BBC showing the same schedule on bbc1 and bbc2.

We watched a programme on c4 and then LoD on iplayer.

KeflavikAirport · 10/04/2021 08:14

Because if they give people a choice of what to watch it will be embarrassingly obvious that no-one is choosing to watch the obsequious BBC drivel.
