Why are Oreos so popular?

I don't get it.
They are less chocolatey than bourbons.
They are more expensive than bourbons.
Yet they get mushed into ice cream, smashed into slushies, added to sundaes and loads of desserts. But they just aren't that nice are they?
Or are they? What is it about them that makes them so popular?

I don't like bourbons or oreos, but if I had to eat one it'd be oreos.

everythingbackbutyou · 09/04/2021 18:52

When I was a teenager in the 90s' Oreos were seen as exciting in that they were quintessentially American and not that readily available in the UK. Maybe it's remnants of that, as opposed to Oreos being anything amazing in and of themselves.

EllisRoses · 09/04/2021 18:53

Oreos are meh, but these ones are amazing!

Afonavon · 09/04/2021 18:54

They are the Emperor’s new clothes of biscuits!

Jobseeker19 · 09/04/2021 18:56

Because for years they weren't available in the UK and were seen as something you saw on American TV.

Then Kraft bought Cadbury and started putting Oreos in products that Cadbury had already cornered.

They are round and look better to the eye than Bourbons.

The black/white contrast is more eye catching.

They are branded whereas Bourbon are own brand.

micaschist · 09/04/2021 18:57

I really don't get it. I think it must be marketing as my kids ask for them whenever they see them.

RampantIvy · 09/04/2021 18:58

@VodselForDinner

Can you really not fathom that people have different tastes to you?

I’m not a fan of Oreos, but understand that others like them.

It’s not difficult.

Because they look chocolately, but don't taste chocolatey. They are just deeply disappointing IMO.

I agree with the Emperor's New Clothes comment.

Selkiebride · 09/04/2021 18:58

I ont get it either they are dry and horrible. Just another American import, reeses are kind of OK, but tbh everything seems to raste crap now Sad

TSSDNCOP · 09/04/2021 19:01

I believe they are America's retribution to us for some unspecified past misdeed. The Hershey of biscuits.Undunkable unless in milk, and therefore quite pointless.

Now, the plain chocolate Hob Nob on the other hand...majestic when dunked or dry, with the bonus of bits to pick from ones back teeth later.

DrGilbertson · 09/04/2021 19:01

They are quite good in a cup with a bit of cold milk poured over then eaten with a spoon. I got this out of an American teenage novel however.

Disfordarkchocolate · 09/04/2021 19:03

My son loves them but I think they look so unpleasant I've never even tried them.

TSSDNCOP · 09/04/2021 19:04

They do have great PR though. Have they been on an Oprah special yet Grin

molojoko · 09/04/2021 19:05

They are just more expensive, yet inferior, bourbons.

MiddleClassProblem · 09/04/2021 19:14

I don’t think bourbons are their equivalent. These are..,

Why are Oreos so popular?
TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 09/04/2021 19:19

I think it is largely from American films. The first time I went the US I was desperate to try a Hershey bar of chocolate which I had heard about... It was horrible, rather like Cadbury's is today oddly enough.

It's the glamour of Hollywood that has been now rubbed away to reveal the plastic underlayer...

EventuallyDistracted · 09/04/2021 19:22

I don't get it either, I think they are dry and don't taste of anything but it wouldn't do if we all liked the same things.

everythingbackbutyou · 09/04/2021 19:23

@TwoLeftSocksWithHoles, one of the first things I did after setting foot on American soil was getting hold of a Hershey bar. It tasted like vomit. So disappointing!

StealthPolarBear · 09/04/2021 19:24

@MiddleClassProblem

I don’t think bourbons are their equivalent. These are..,
Those are delicious, as are their white equivalents
Spied · 09/04/2021 19:26

American hype that's all.

MiddleClassProblem · 09/04/2021 19:27

I don’t think it’s American hype. I like them. But I like bourbons too.

It’s just a different flavour.

CustardGoodJamGoodMeatGood · 09/04/2021 19:28

I love the double stuffed ones with milk, I don't know why though because they're not half as chocolatey as other biscuits and the don't go with a brew

Moonwhite · 09/04/2021 19:37

I watched a YouTube video with a really good bit about Oreo's. I tried to find it but I watched too many by the same person, so no luck.

Apparently a lot of science has gone into Oreo's to make them as moreish to Americans as possible. Supposedly the clever thing is that they're deliberately designed to not be too delicious, but actually to deliver a slightly unsatisfying mouth experience so the person reaches for another one. (It doesn't work for me tbh, I can leave half a packet of Oreo's in the cupboard for ages. Custard creams on the other hand...)

Lorw · 09/04/2021 19:58

They are just delish 😋 especially with a glass of milk

drpet49 · 09/04/2021 20:03

* I think they're just aggressively marketed by the delightful Mondelez.*

^I was just about to say this. All down to the marketing. I don’t know anyone that actually eats them.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 09/04/2021 20:10

The only ones with any taste are the Oreo Thin Mints. You can't taste the chocolate, but the mint flavor is nice.
