@ohforarainyday bit difficult, the Countess of Mountbatten has been dead for four years.

@ohforarainyday Do you have evidence that Penny K was his girlfriend? I don't believe it. AFAIK, she was a friend of the Queen, as well as Prince Philip.

I stand corrected; Prince Philip requested that he not have a state funeral.

Zancah · 09/04/2021 18:34

It was widely reported in the press that the Queen did not visit him in the hospital

And the reason given was that a monarch couldn't have gone to the hospital without causing severe disruption, given all the protocols and security needed and that the staff at the hospital didn't need that kind of hassle in covid times. Something which I agree with, tbh.

Thank you Mumsnet HQ.

@mosgirl

I felt more upset than I expected to. The end of an era, and for most of us, he has been a figure at the queen's side for all of our lives.

I feel very sad for the Queen and her family. Just because someone is elderly it doesn't make their death any less sad for those who loved him. He was a husband, dad and grandfather.

Totally agree. Yes, of course, 99 is a good age but that doesn't mean people won't be sad that he has died especially, obviously his family.

Both my parents died in January of covid within less than 2 weeks of each other. They were 91 and 94 so both good ages. I was, and still am, devastated as are both of my siblings.

I thought it was very rare that the Queen visited anybody in hospital (I don't mean planned Royal visits, but visiting the family). I thought when she went to see Sophie Wessex it was very unusual.

Waitingfor12th · 09/04/2021 19:29

@AWamBamBoom

I agree *@Handsoffstrikesagain*, she's lost her confident, the person who knew her inside out, the last person who will call her by her nick name...

Oh that's so sad about her nickname Sad

I feel terribly terribly sad for the queen. She now has no-one left. I know many elderly people are widowed, but to be completely alone and be undertaking the duties of the Monarch for the rest of your days must feel like a unique type of hell. SadSadSadSadSad

Did anyone see the photo the BBC used at the end of their segment there? It was lovely.

SheldonesqueDidItInTheShadows · 09/04/2021 19:45

@lynsey91 Flowers

I hope happier times find you and that you can ease your heart a little with fond memories and the love they left you holding x

Frownette · 09/04/2021 19:55

Penny Knatchbull is a friend of Queen and PP, not everything has to be sexual.

I'm sure Prince Charles will accompany her if required on public outings. She has trusted friends and family although this isn't the same as a companion of several decades. And the corgis? Dorgis?

@Kendodd

Do you think if crowds gather at a vigil to mourn him they'll get the same treatment by the police as the women at the Sarah Everard vigil?
At Windsor castle and Buckingham Palace people are being allowed to stand for a few moments, leave flowers if they have them, and then being asked to move in. The announcement board was removed after an hour or so to avoid crowds gathering to read it.
Frownette · 09/04/2021 20:23

I'd move in :)

cyclingmad · 09/04/2021 20:25

Yes mumsnet let's just wipe out history shall we by deleting posts that point out that the man isn't this amazing guy that you all what to portray him as.

VictoriaLudorum · 09/04/2021 20:42

Probably not unexpected, but thoughts and prayers for HM the Queen and her family.
Lovely man, talented, intelligent and a terrific sense of humour.
RIP

Alert alert

Someone’s microchip is malfunctioning and gobshite mode has been initiated.

Let he that is without sin cast the first stone.

No?

Then today is not the day.

kingat · 09/04/2021 20:50

Bit confused, what is a state funeral? How is it different from Dianas for example?

NoWordForFluffy · 09/04/2021 20:54

Apparently it's the same as a state funeral, except the Queen will pay and there will be no gun carriage. Which is what Diana's funeral was like.

Corcory · 09/04/2021 20:58

I have a great respect for Prince Philip, he had a very troubled start in life yet went on to show great fortitude in the Navy. Only for his marrying the future monarch who unexpectedly succeeded her father early would he not have gone on to have an illustrious career. He dedicated the rest of his life to service to the UK and commonwealth, he helped form the WWF was one of the first environmentalists and his interest in helping young people was well known. I feel too many people mix up Royals with a sense of duty and the world of celebrity with all the wealth and adoration that that involves. Prince Philip certainly never wanted adoration or any accolades at all that was the measure of the man.
