We went for a walk in the countryside yesterday and in nearby fields saw several of these green bucket type things on legs. Can anyone more knowledgeable than me enlighten me as to what they are please. (Apologies not a brilliant photo)

Hard to see but my guess is a feeder for pheasants.

Travellingtricksters · 08/04/2021 23:41

It’s a bin.

backinthebox · 08/04/2021 23:43

Pheasant feeder.

TheSpottedZebra · 08/04/2021 23:43

Yep feeder for pheasants etc. The food drops down into that inverted baskety thing underneath the 'bin'.

LemonRoses · 08/04/2021 23:44

Pheasant feeding area

Overdueanamechange · 08/04/2021 23:47

Yes pheasant feeder. Sometimes they smell of aniseed, which is the pheasant equivalent of catnip.

thinkfast · 08/04/2021 23:47

Thank you!

Pheasant feeder makes sense. It had a metal basket thing underneath.

It wouldn't be a bin as there were lots of them on private / inaccessible land.

Their are a zillion pheasants about atm. What happened last year to the shoots? Presume none went ahead? Surplus this year or did they just not breed as many?

omgwhy · 09/04/2021 00:43

@Loveisthehope they went ahead in our neck of the woods (hampshire) no idea if they were allowed too?

Loveisthehope · 09/04/2021 00:45

Ah ok, maybe as it's outdoors? I think it happens during the late summer too so probably ok last August

Overdueanamechange · 09/04/2021 08:54

The official shoots weren't allowed to go ahead, off the top of my head after December (the months are merging for me). There would have been an element of permitted shooting, but no organised shoots as such.

The shoots where I live (Surrey Hills) were canceled, we have a pheasant infestation! They are everywhere, so sad to see so many dead as they dart in front of cars from bushes Sad they are really beautiful though, amazing colouring (on the males anyway). I love to see them.
carbon60 · 09/04/2021 21:48

Its a dalek, if they fall over theyre dead daleks :-) at least that what my horse thought lol

CombatBarbie · 09/04/2021 21:55

We have resident pheasants who perch on my tower bird feeder.... Totally non plussed about the 60kg dog around. I like them but we have built a large allotment and reckon they will destroy it so have been shooing them away with no luck.
