Hi,
Couple of questions re the Open Golf in St Andrew’s in 2022 if anyone can help me?
How do you get tickets? Is it a ballot?
Can anyone suggest some lovely self-catering in St. Andrew’s that can take 2 adults and 2 children?
If it all comes together this will be my husband’s 50th birthday present. Fingers crossed!
Thanks!

Getting tickets shouldn't be a problem but I'd check out the R&A for info on pre-registering. Self-catering you probably want to start looking to book now. Many locals go on holiday and let out their homes but be prepared to pay £5k minimum to be in town. Some of the outlying villages will be cheaper but then you have the issue of getting into St Andrews everyday, costs of parking or taxis, shuttle buses etc. The University let all their accommodation but I don't know if there would be anything suitable for families and it is often booked really early by all the corporate teams providing catering or trade stands etc.

@doodlejump1980 just back from a wee trip to the old town (I'm from St A's but live at other end of Fife now) and I was thinking a bit more. If I was you I'd post on some of the community Facebook groups to say you're looking for accommodation for a family for the Open. You might get people who are contemplating renting out but are being put off by the thought of a bunch of lads in their home (this is why my mother never wanted to do it despite having a home that could have got her £10k for the week). There are many caravan/lodge type sites but often they can be booked up for one golfer and their entourage. My friend rented her home to a golfer and had to make sure there was room for him, wife & kids, nanny, in-laws; his manager, coach, reps from his sponsors were down the road & needed access to a nearby farm field to land the helicopter😂). If it's only your DH that will attend the golf then it's worth looking further out. If it was me I'd drop DH in St Andrews and take the kids to explore round about, depending on their ages there is loads within a 10-15 mile radius, beaches, farm parks, Dundee for V&A, science centre, Discovery ship, you could get train from Leuchars or Cupar and explore Edinburgh. Then back to pick up DH at night.

Thanks @kingdomcapers that’s brilliant! It doesn’t take long to get to Dundee from St. Andrew’s does it? Our boys (DTs) will be 7 by then, so can’t guarantee that they’ll be quiet for the golf, so it will just be DH for the golf. Was also looking at Pittenwiem and Anstruther too, but the place we stayed before wanted a minimum 9-night stay. (At £250 a night!)
Might just take the tent!! 😂😂

On a normal day about 20 minutes but factor in a bit more even though you'll mostly be going against the traffic. I can't stress enough how busy the town gets. Pittenweem (and most of East Neuk) is fab My favourite beach is Kingsbarns (and you can get THE best toasties at the Cheesy Toast Shack). My friends like the campsite at Nydie, which is about 4 miles out. If I was closer you could pitch your tent in our gardenGrin
