Children have no respect.

Posting on behalf of someone close to me who is really struggling to deal with his children, range of ages, from pre school to teenager. They have no respect for him. Shout at him, swear at him, steal from him. Aren't nice to each other either sometimes. He's recently got full custody of them due to unforeseen circumstances and he's becoming really upset with how they behave. The eldest just walks out when he can't cope, they are up til all hours of the night, struggle to wake up for school.
How can he change this and is there any websites or books for advice that anyone knows of please?

Thanks

It probably depends on how their life has been up until now. Has the lack of respect for him in particular been because of how their mum spoke about him? Is it a reaction to stress or trauma? Is it something they’ve seen modelled? How much contact has he had with them before?

Probs testing his boundaries to see what they can get away with

I think he needs some professional help. Getting full custody is a substantial adjustment at the best of times but this sounds as if its the result of something traumatic.

It sounds like the children are reacting to having been through a very traumatic time. Are they getting any help?

This sounds like it is not at root a respect issue but an unhappiness issue?

I suggest seeking some support from young minds or other for starters.

Their mother had no boundaries for them at all. We're allowed to do what they wanted. Been separated 2 years and dad was always undermined as soon as he was out for work. Regular contact maintained since separation, EOW and a night in the week. Both parents are on amicable terms. Potential children neglected whilst with mum and string of men since she decided she wanted to separate from dad.
