What is going on with BA277?
Took off from Heathrow - now appears to be stacking to land again. Interesting!

Is that the one circling over the Thames estuary now? Is a bit odd for sure

emmathedilemma · 07/04/2021 16:55

It said "Diverted to LHR" so i guess it's dumping fuel and coming back in for whatever reason. Most likely technical?

MrsCaptainJakeBallard · 07/04/2021 16:56

Just opened it out of pure curiosity Grin
Do they normally circle like that?

weird.

Snowpatrolling · 07/04/2021 16:58

Says on Twitter it’s returning due to a technical issue.

emmathedilemma · 07/04/2021 16:59

Not on the way out @MrsCaptainJakeBallard! Maybe if they were waiting to land but that tends to be larger circles.

MadameMinimes · 07/04/2021 17:00

Very odd.

MrsPatrickDempsey · 07/04/2021 17:00

It was stacking for ages so couldn't have been too serious

Precisely this. It needs to jettison fuel over the sea before it can land safely.
Longdistance · 07/04/2021 17:01

Looks like it's heading back to LHR.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 07/04/2021 17:02

On its way back now

scottgirl · 07/04/2021 17:03

So it's been circling for an hour and a half?

notimagain · 07/04/2021 17:06

Looks like it departed, for some reason initially entered (the standard)
hold over Biggin Hill...then headed out over the Thames to hold again - my guess would be that would be for fuel dumping purposes because that's something the authorities prefer not to done overland (even though no fuel should reach the surface) or in a standard hold that other aircraft are using ..

Looks like they are on approach as I type.

The fact they went off and dumped fuel, rather than rushing back to land overweight hopefully is a sign it was a minor problem.

Landed!

I used to work night shifts and when I got home at unsociable hours, I used to watch FedEx and UPS planes landing and taking off in the Midlands and going to Cologne. I used to get really into it. You're not a geek....yet...

For those that were following this, from the "BA source" website this morning:

British Airways Boeing 777-236ER G-YMMR operating BA277 London Heathrow – Hyderabad stopped the climb at 6,000ft near Orpington this afternoon due to a technical issue, entered a hold to work checklists then positioned off the coast to a hold north of Whitstable to burn fuel before returning to London Heathrow for a safe landing. The aircraft departed again after just over three hours on the ground and successfully completed the flight.

(Given the time taken and location of where it was done I rather suspect "burn fuel" should actually be "dump fuel").
