Crushed Velvet Sofas

The time has come to buy new sofas. I have off white leather at the moment, but I fancy a change to black crushed velvet. I'm into black. I had black the time before the white and got white for a change before everyone seemed to have white.
Is crushed velvet in or naff? I think I like it. Opinion me!

Does it matter if they are 'in' or not if you like them?

SpacePotato · 07/04/2021 02:08

Crushed velvet always looks cheap and shiny to me.

Frownette · 07/04/2021 03:27

Oh I love it, dark blue though!

I don't like them, but then I wouldn't go with white leather either so you and I clearly have different tastes - and that's okay. Don't worry about what's 'in' - just buy what you love!

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 07/04/2021 05:01

Im not a fan of it, but then why does that matter to you? If you like it, go for it!

Einszwei · 07/04/2021 05:20

Maybe also think about longevity. I imagine it would be a nightmare to keep clean.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 07/04/2021 05:23

Not a fan, uncomfortable, a bitch to clean - plus I heard one of the towie lot say a dark velvet sofa needs hoovering constantly because of how easily it shows dust etc.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 07/04/2021 05:57

This is MN, crushed velvet is not popular on here. But it's your home and your sofas! So if you like it, buy it.

OhSayWhat · 07/04/2021 06:37

I have navy velvet but not crushed. I’m a bit pedantic about fluff and vacuuming generally but to be honest, it’s been fine for everyday use and with a dog. I do vacuum/brush them about once every 2-3 weeks and it takes about 10 mins but other than that they are surprisingly hard wearing. Plus, I love how they look so I don’t care if they are ‘in’.

UCOinaUCG · 07/04/2021 06:49

I have a red velvet sofa. I've had it for 13 years and it still looks fabulous. It's comfortable and easy to keep clean. I would go for it.

Snog · 07/04/2021 09:07

I love velvet, but crushed velvet is a bit bordello for me

CoffeeWithCheese · 07/04/2021 09:37

MN hates them and the fluff on a dark coloured one would drive me insane - but if it's what you want - go for it.

Word of caution though - the lead times on sofas at hte moment are bonkers cos everyone's bloody ordered them after being stuck at home all year (we ordered ours pre-Xmas and still have no delivery date)

LadyPoison · 07/04/2021 10:00

I wouldn't want one. I've never seen one I like.

However it's your home so have what you want

GiveTheGirlAGun · 07/04/2021 10:00

Thanks! I'll be going with velvet and not crushed. I was worrying it looked a bit, well, a bit naff.

Oh I love velvet sofas I’m not too fond of crushed ones though 🙈

OhWhyNot · 07/04/2021 10:14

Why not buy sofa covers

I’m doing this with my sofa it’s still fine for use but I no longer want a leather sofa (very practical when ds was young

I have covered my dinning chairs too as there is nothing wrong with them I just wanted a different look

I love velvet so what if others don’t

Worriesome · 07/04/2021 10:35

I have a crushed velvet sofa in a mink colour it’s gorgeous x

howsicklyarsekissy · 07/04/2021 10:38

There's a lovely velvet one my friend have by Jules (the women clothes shop) from DFS it's classy and comfortable she has it in navy blue & it's stunning

MimiPigeon · 07/04/2021 10:39

Crushed velvet is naff, sorry. Plain velvet is ok.

SnoopyOnALude · 07/04/2021 10:44

Crushed velvet is very TOWIE but if you like it, so what!

I love 'normal' velvet, its sumptuous, comfortable and stylish. I have a navy blue velvet sofa and it is so hardwearing, I have two mud and dirt loving dogs and it never gets marked or dirty, it's had its share of red wine spilt on it it too, you would never know, it looks brand new.

That's the one I have, it's beautiful!

Great decision. Velvet is timeless. Crushed velvet sofas are already flooding Facebook marketplace etc. They look really naff as well.

GiveTheGirlAGun · 07/04/2021 10:48

Navy blue sounds appealing - my carpets and curtains are grey though.
I'm into goth but black has been so hijacked and hence my thread, I don't know about crushed, it is so much cheaper than velvet, likely I know why. I still like it so I'll have to look when the shops open.
The DFS one, I've seen that, it does look lovely.
We are also thinking of selling up so I want to appeal to people. I know the sofa will be going with us, but you know sometimes people can't see past stuff.
The white sofa has had a six year old on it all her life so it is looking a bit tired.
