Mine was on my 18th birthday starting a twitter account on my new laptop! Seems so old fashioned to read tweets on a laptop now. Britney Spears was the first person I followed.

How old are you? I remember the old 'chat rooms' where you just logged on and spoke to strangers on any subject and I remember when Facebook was invitation only. I got mine and thought it was brilliant!

QueenPaw · 06/04/2021 22:29

MSN, MySpace, friends reunited

ArtemisiaGentle · 06/04/2021 22:30

1997 chat rooms.
Then Friends Reunited.

AgeLikeWine · 06/04/2021 22:35

I remember joining Friend Reunited in 2001. Once the novelty wore off, I sort of forgot about it. I never did join Facebook, Instagram etc etc and I have no plans to.

I’m 23 so grew up with social media

I remember MySpace and msn being a thing amongst older people when I was in year 7/aged 10. However I think the main social media I used was BBM/WhatsApp then Twitter/Instagram/Snapchat. I have had my Instagram account for almost 10 years lol

Facebook was popular when I was in school, but (no offence) this was back when mainly young people used it. No one I know uses it now, it’s essentially social media for older adults.

merryhouse · 06/04/2021 22:37

Good gracious.

1988, my account on VAX at York. I was JHW1, but I edited my logon details so that in a list of users I showed up as a description of my specific (ridiculous non-)fashion choice.

Most of the people I chatted to were already friends, but we did encounter the ten-year-old son of one of the lecturers - and someone who was already chatting to him, can't remember who now.

Mildly regret being too busy to have been on Jorvik a year or so later.

Finally got a home internet link and officially joined afp in 1998.

I still read tweets on a laptop Grin

sugarpaste · 06/04/2021 22:37

ICQ was the first thing i ever chatted to strangers on.

CallingOnAvengingAngels · 06/04/2021 22:40

Ah, ICQ! I can hear the message notification now! One of my school friends met her first boyfriend on there, 21 years later they're still together.

SweetAsANutt · 06/04/2021 22:42

Piczo, MSN, Bebo, MySpace (I miss MySpace!).
Agree with PP with fb. I'm 28 and no one I know uses fb anymore unless they're a business.

Gloomandglow · 06/04/2021 22:43

I used to arrange to meet friends in chat rooms (UKchat) because it cost 10p per text message! We must have been around 14 in 2001.

lljkk · 07/04/2021 06:49

usenet?
So that would be 1987

Define what is social media

AmazingBouncingFerret · 07/04/2021 06:58

Yahoo chat and mIRC.

PhilCornwall1 · 07/04/2021 07:00

1988, my account on VAX at York.

Blimey, I'm not too different to that. I was at Plymouth and we had a PDP-11 in the basement and loads of us used to chat to others over JANET.

CovidCorvid · 07/04/2021 07:01

Yahoo chat rooms (think it was yahoo) in the late 90s.
Friends reunited about the same era.

Mumsnet in about 2001/2002.

Didn’t get Facebook until about 2006. Have a vague recollection of msn before Facebook but don’t think I really used it.

Justaonetimeting · 07/04/2021 07:06

WWF (as in wrestling not pandas) chat room on their website when I was 11. We used to type angry South Park quotes at middle aged men who may have worked out we were 11.

WeatherwaxLives · 07/04/2021 07:06

MSN talking to other kids at school.

Various chat rooms talking to strangers. There was one that had graphics of actual rooms, you had a little pixellated person that you walked around into the different rooms and talked to other little pixellated people.

Ragwort · 07/04/2021 07:07

Mumsnet here as well - late 2000 ... in fact that's still only my 'real' social media use Blush, I've never had a FB account or used Twitter, Instagram etc.

Does a telex machine in the early 1980s count Grin?

merrymelody · 07/04/2021 07:15

Friends Reunited.

merrymelody · 07/04/2021 07:17

And MN in 2003.
