Is there a system to find out how to get your future shifts?
DS has just started working there and has had a phone call for last 2 weeks, but surely there is a rota or online system he needs?
( he is autistic and has been to shy to ask....)
Many thanks

A relative worked there a year or two ago, and in their branch the rota was put on the wall. It did sometimes get changed at short notice, and if he wasn't working the day it got changed, he'd turm up for his next shift to find that they'd changed his hours and not told him. One of the reasons he left in the end.

However, since your DS has autism, they should put a specific procedure in place for him and give him the support he needs. I'm assuming they know he's autistic?

Thank you. Yes they know but he likes to keep it low key. He's currently making a list of things to ask. :)

Keeping it low key is good, as long as the managers and supervisors don't lose sight of it, and remain aware that he needs just that little bit extra consistency of approach.

And well done him for getting the job Smile

Ah, thank you! I/ he is really proud, he'd applied for loads of jobs and not heard a thing, but applied, attended interview and got this one job totally by himself, he didn't mention the autism until his second shift, but got really good feedback on his work and the manager and supervisor seemed supportive :)
He's 20 , and really needed this boost. He also volunteers for a charity shop.

Congratulations to him on getting the job. My 27 year old ds has autism, he also volunteered in a charity shop then got his first permanent paid job at B&M. He has now moved on to Tesco but he was at B&M for over 2 years and it gave him a good grounding in retail work. I hope it all goes well.

Your son sounds adorable, OP! I hope the new job works out for him Smile
And he did the right thing telling them about his autism. My 19 year old is also in a shop job (and in a similar type of shop), and didn't tell them about her autism. I wish she had, because the manager doesn't know his arse from his elbow, changes things last minute, and gets all stressy with the staff!
I can't help but feel that transparency would have worked better for her, but it was her choice. And she's been there a year now (most of the time it's fine!).

B & M are shit at giving you notice of your future shifts normally you only find out about a week before.
Theres an app that will have his shifts on.
They should have told him about it on his first day. His user name is normally his staff number.
But he needs to be aware that they often change the coming week at last minute so he'll need to check it regularly (well my branch does, hopefully his doesn't)
Also they usually print it out and stick it up on the staff notice board.

Thanks everyone.

BradTomby an app would be great !

Hey would you happen to know this app has I have just started working for them and need to see my rota and no one told me about the app

earsup · 30/10/2021 21:37

Who ever plans the shifts at my local store needs firing...often outside are maybe 5 or 6 staff...on break......while inside only one check out open and massive queues....so many people just abandon their trolley and leave....I do...!!

dayswithaY · 30/10/2021 23:27

There is an app but you have to get a link.

Does anyone know if B&Mrs staff rotas are produced by an automated system or if they're done manually by the managers?

Of course they are done manually. They need to take into account experience, longevity, seniority, local events, weather conditions, other outside factors.

An automated system would never work for writing a rota for any business.

@FlowersInTheSky I don't know how you can say that with such authority. It would depend on the programming and variables it is capable of considering. It's not going to be as simple as, "we need five staff on X day" and that's that.

I can say it with certainty because no system can consider human factors like training, experience, seniority or longevity, not even to mention emotional well-being which also needs to be taken into account.
