Anyone else feeling thoroughly inadequate as a mother today?

I know I'm not. We've had a lovely, low key Easter. Everything we do is low key. Walk around the park with grandparents yesterday, roast dinner and a forest walk today. National trust gardens with friends tomorrow for an Easter trail. DS has been mountain biking, DH has been for a long jog, I've been reading my book. Lovely. I think it's time I quit social media. I haven't got an Easter tree or Easter baskets or personalised boxes or floral displays. We haven't got a BBQ or a fire pit. We've not had friends over for a garden party. I just handed DS his egg this morning which he happily scoffed for breakfast. I know I'm not a shit mum but I genuinely feel like I'm not making enough effort, everyone else is having more fun, making more memories.

I came off fb around 7 years ago and have no other social media. The seemingly constant competition as to who has the most perfect life used to piss me off . It sounds like it's a thousand times worse than it was then and I don't miss it at all.

ChaBishkoot · 04/04/2021 18:06

We are not Christian so Easter is not a thing in our household (we are just not religious). We are also in the US so Friday wasn’t a holiday. There was a little chocolate this morning. No egg hunt. Kids played in the local park. One had music practice. Watched a movie, and now heading to a friend’s place where they’ll have pizza for dinner, play some more and home to bath and bed. Just a normal weekend with a slice of chocolate and an ice cream in the afternoon.

SpiceRat · 04/04/2021 18:25

Your Easter sounds lush to be fair. All this posing on social media with stuff ... kids won’t remember that. I couldn’t tell you half the stuff I got at Easter or even Christmas and birthdays as a child. But I do remember going to the beach and climbing the rocks hunting for crabs with my dad. I remember sitting reading comics on the sofa with my dad while he whittled his sticks. I remember mam taking me to natural trust places and letting me run around the gardens. I remember the time spent not the tat that goes along with it. You sound like a bloody great parent to me.

@FoxyTheFox love that!

No Easter decs, egg hunt or bbq here. No family either, as they're 150 miles away. Not even a stately home or National Trust visit.

DH and DD went to Mass and then the park, while I went for a run. We had a nice dinner, and now eating choc and watching films. I watched Easter Parade while the others were out, then we watched Wonder Woman, Goblet of Fire and now Order of the Phoenix 😁

Tried not to look at Facebook, but couldn't avoid the perfect family Easter table, decs, day of Easter crafts, egg hunts, pictures of people's dinners etc. Oh well, everyone here seems happy enough. Off to eat more chocolate 🍫😋

underneaththeash · 04/04/2021 18:40

We had the most amazing day today and did similar things to you. I saw my mum and her partner for the first time in months, had roast in the garden.
It was sunny, the children played, did an egg hunt and ate lots of chocolate!

BluntlySpoken · 04/04/2021 18:41

You sound amazing.
We don't have the tree and Dec's.
We do have personalised boxes. Simply because it was one of them plat pack things Ans I felt crafty. They look shite.
They had a little hunt this morning for them tiny foil eggs.

Weve not even given them their actual eggs. Waiting for one dc to get home to give all together.

I'm not in competition with anyone. It doesn't bother me what others have. My kids are happy. As is yours that's all that matters

BluntlySpoken · 04/04/2021 18:42

And our bbq is minging and in need of a scrub from last year haha

Itsmemaggie · 04/04/2021 18:47

@FoxyTheFox

Just remember - when the grass on the other side of the fence seems greener, it's usually because it's fertilised with bullshit.
Love this!
EcoCustard · 04/04/2021 18:48

Sounds perfect to me. We went for a lovely long dog walk this morning in the sunshine. Came home, grandma came round for late lunch and an egg hunt for the kids. Afternoon playing in the garden now eating chocolate with a film.

I have unfollowed or unfriended all people on my social media who post pictures of there exciting activities or stuff only on it for some study groups, dogs, wildlife, gardening and environmental ones not for the people. I have far more happy memories of Easter over the years than other events and I think it’s because it was always low key, relaxed and no fuss made.

KurtWilde · 04/04/2021 18:56

DC ate chocolate, I ate chocolate and had some wine, lots of Netflix and all in pjs. Much the same planned for tomorrow. Sounds like you've had a fab day, as have we!

Disneyblue · 04/04/2021 19:00

I felt like this a bit earlier after seeing other mums on SM Posting pictures of the Easter biscuits they've baked, etc.
My little girl is 18 months and I haven't bothered with all that. It's partly because I'm a bit lazy and I don't really care much about Easter or Halloween and thus don't really 'celebrate' them. Christmas and birthdays bit different but I still don't do over the top stuff like some mums do.

Also, my little girl is 18 months and has spent the whole afternoon having fun in the garden, playing with me, her dad. She's played in the sandpit, eaten pizza, mud, chalked on the paving. She's had a smile on her face all day. If I'd have done an Easter egg hunt she wouldn't have been interested. She'd have gone off in her own little world.

So yea, I feel better now after reading this and realising the above.its just not me.

LookAChicken · 04/04/2021 19:07

I made biscuits today because we were all home to eat them and because my kids are teenagers so really don't need my attention any more!

Plus they prepared and cooked the veg for dinner so I had the time to mess about with some new recipes. For fun and to do something different for me.

Who is all this sharing on social media FOR? It's not for the kids' benefit.

Frokni · 04/04/2021 19:09

@JesusInTheCabbageVan my apologies for the phrase, it's not even correctly used but essentially I stacked Easter eggs by the fire place to make them look organised and "special" and added nothing else to it. No decorations or lights etc. The DDs were the most excited I have seen them since Xmas this morning when they saw it :-D

The Persian feast did look good but only if you like food from that part of the world as aubergine puree does not photograph well Smile. Will happily DM you a pic should you wish! My friends food pics on WhatsApp are making me hungry again :-)

goes to fridge for leftovers

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 04/04/2021 20:01

@Frokni I wasn't having a go, honest! It just struck me as funny!

I once tried making fesenjan and buggered it up a bit, I think, as it was way too walnutty!

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 04/04/2021 20:01

That's a lot of exclamation marks Blush

Summergarden · 04/04/2021 20:32

Well I haven’t posted any pics on FB, but we had an Easter egg hunt in the garden then went to a forest to do the high ropes adventure course. Pretty exciting you’d think, plus great adventure playground there and they had an ice cream each. We do actually have an Easter tree because I have a thing for decorating the house seasonally, it’s been up for about 6 weeks. Oh, and we made chocolate Easter nest cakes when we got home today.

When I put DS 6 to bed I asked what his favourite part of the day was. His reply? When I cut his toenails after his shower because they’d got too long and had been irritating him!

So all the Easter related shizz and day out were completely superfluous.

Solongtoshort · 04/04/2021 22:40

Comparison is the thief of joy, or something like that my Nan used to say, but what someone on the 1st page said about the grass being greener was so well put.

Etsylicious · 04/04/2021 23:21

I felt a bit similar to you this evening OP after checking social media...

However, we have had a lovely weekend with our boy. A little egg hunt. A v low key barbecue with in-laws yesterday - and a walk in the park and Sunday lunch with my folks today. I didn’t take any pics 🤷🏻‍♀️

Also I was in hosp yesterday having my sixth miscarriage confirmed.

Honestly, social media doesn’t reflect everything. You sound like a great mum...

bonfireheart · 05/04/2021 09:51

OP, you sound like a great mum. Please watch this video, it's so funny and make you realise even more how great you are

Frokni · 05/04/2021 11:11

@JesusInTheCabbageVan oh sorry; no I didn't think you had a go- tone never comes across when typing Smile. Well done for having a go and yes it's super walnutty. The really traditional recipes take ages and sometimes aren't worth the effort lol.

Khoresht karafs is what I made in addition to chicken kebabs (but swapped celery for Red Cherries- 3 hours start to finish) which is a lamb and rice dish we usually have but I turned it into a stew, then made, saffron rice, bread, 2 types of salad.

Persian food is tricky and time consuming and thankfully I have a half Iranian DH and an aunt who married a Persian and trained herself to be an exceptional chef with her late DHs help who in-turn trained me. Took a day just to get the gist of making the rice lol!

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 05/04/2021 13:43
Easter Smile

Looked up khoresht karafs - that sounds amazing, I will definitely have a go at that soon. My lot know very little about Persian food, so however it turns out I can just tell them it's authentic Grin

Bumpsadaisie · 05/04/2021 14:01

You're doing well. In our house we didn't remember to get Easter eggs till later on Saturday when despite visiting six supermarkets no eggs to be had anywhere for love nor money.

Bad Easter 🐰 !

Thankfully kids very happy with a few ordinary cream eggs and the chance to give us a lecture about being more organised next year!

Faith50 · 05/04/2021 15:17

We did an Easter egg hunt and my dc received two eggs each. No photos or videos on social media.

I would advise you come off social media. I stopped posting pictures/updates a year ago. It was the best decision - no more comparisons with other people's lifestyles, looks, houses, holidays etc. I always felt shit after browsing through Instagram.
