What can I use to play audiobooks ?

My DD listens to audiobooks at bedtime. We play them from Audible as i also use it.
She's currently using a very old phone but the battery only lasts a couple of hours. Is the best thing to buy a new cheap phone without a sim or are there other options?

I don't have a laptop so things that need plugging in to transfer aren't an option.

I feel clueless these days when it comes to tech, I think I peaked in 2005 with an ipod 🤣

A smart speaker, like Google nest, or Amazon alexa?

Do you have wifi?

onemouseplace · 04/04/2021 13:33

Something like an Amazon Echo would be perfect. She can then listen to music/ the radio as well if she likes.

Yep we use an Alexa for DS to listen on. Often available on offer on Amazon.

Plug the old phone in in her bedroom and leave it charging, or buy an echo dot for about £25

It's quite expensive but we have recently got a yoto player for playing audiobooks. But you generally get the audiobooks on cards from the yoto store (although it can be a bluetooth speaker). So if you already have a cache of books on audible there will be cheaper ways to play them, rather than investing in a whole new system.

Depending on her age, a cheap tablet might be an option, and adds versatility.

The smallest cheapest Amazon fire tablet is £35.

Aquamarine1029 · 04/04/2021 13:41

I would get her an Amazon Fire tablet.

Alexa. Just make sure when you ask Alexa to play the book you say the title. If you say 'Alexa play audible' she will start the last booklistened to. As often in thus house, DH DGD and I have one on the go it can be confusing. Especially for DGD when she is expecting The Twits and she get Jack Reacher Grin

I use Alexa Dot or Kindle Fire - both work well.
Dot in my bedroom - Fire is with me wherever

My 8 and 6yo have Alexa in their bedrooms so they can listen to audible. It also controls their lights so when they are done reading they can switch their light off and play audible to fall asleep to. It works well for them and they like being able to choose.

Oh wow thanks everyone, some great ideas here! I think I'll look into an echo / alexa or a cheap tablet I think. Just off for a google now. Thanks for the suggestions, I'd never even thought of these options.
