Do you use ellipses?

I absolutely bristle at ellipses.
I find it hard to see any justification for adults using these. Sure, there is a place for them in primary school suspense writing, but I fail to see how they in any way enhance adult written communication. At best, they leave something implied, rather than clearly expressed and suggest you have to 'figure it out'. At worst, they are passive aggressive.
I have a friend who uses them so weirdly, it makes everything seem like a subtle come-on: "Perhaps you could come over for a cup of tea..." or "I'm free all day tomorrow..." or "I'd go for the blue, it looks pretty on you..."
One parent on school SM group always seems to use them instead of full stops, each sentence punctuated by ellipses. Like a kind of stream of consciousness rather than actual communication: "Mr T mentioned it this morning... I think it could have been handled better... At least now, we'll all be on the same page... I'll see what George says about it later..."
I fail to see the appeal. Do you use them and if so, what do you think they add to what you are hoping to say?

@FlibbertyGiblets

If we are having a low level grumble, what are people's thoughts about the triple comma,,, please?
Very irritating indeed. What's it even meant to mean?

@gettingfedupagain

Ellipsis not ellipses...
No, they are both correct. Ellipsis is the singular and ellipses is the plural.

So this thread isn't about an oval like shape......

Shit, Google tells me you can only have 3 dots.

Muphry's law wins again.

But at least I've learnt something.

CovidCorvid · 06/04/2021 11:27

I use them quite a bit, had no idea they were seen as passive aggressive...I knew they were bad grammatically.

celiafforcandle · 06/04/2021 11:35

I use them as @GoWalkabout said to indicate that I am open to further suggestion or alternatives. Or I am leaving something unfinished for other contributions. They therefore only occur in personal notes, never in an essay or report.

I suggest these general Chat area are ideal for finding out about new informal usage.

DiscordandRhyme · 06/04/2021 11:53

Why not...

I love them!

MumofPsuedoAdult · 06/04/2021 11:59

I do sometimes, and it's normally on text or whatsapp where it's a gap filler to a proper conversation so yes...I'm leaving things unsaid...to be said later.

LemonDrizzles · 08/04/2021 21:00

Yes, i use the. It helps convey that i have more to say on the matter but I'm not going to at this time because I do not think the other party is that interested. If they are, they can ask.
Perhaps it depends on how these other parties are using it with you?

LookAChicken · 08/04/2021 21:05

It says to me that the writer doesn't' want to ...erm...come across as like, decisive or anything scary like that..

I've heard the young'uns think full stops are angry / aggressive.Confused

LookAChicken · 08/04/2021 21:07

But that ellipses are used by the middle aged..

merryhouse · 08/04/2021 21:15

@TheSmallAssassin

I use them fairly regularly, but not too liberally. Sometimes I even use the proper symbol, instead of typing three full stops…
tell me more!

(I use them far too much, I think)

Freetodowhatiwant · 08/04/2021 21:21

I hate it when people use them too often. Same as exclamation marks. Occasionally you will see someone post on here and after every sentence you will find a.... or a! I will often go back through an email and delete both if I feel I’ve used them unnecessarily. I also think ellipses are often used in a passive aggressive way. Oh and don’t get me started on people using more than three dots.

ZenNudist · 08/04/2021 21:29

I do. Sometimes like a 'wait for it' bef ore a punchline.

My BIL once gave me a piece of writing for his commercial website. Punctuated entirely with hyphens. That gave me the rage!

I very occaisionally use semi colons too. So shoot me.
