How is 'Hebden Bridge' pronounced?

Hebden (with an H sound) or Ebden (silent H).

I say it's one way, DP the other Grin

@x2boys we lived in Bacup for years, however I can't comment on any pronunciations as we were blow-ins from "down south"!!
Always said Hebden with the "H", was Confused by Oswaldtwistle (Ozzy was easier!!!) and love Barnoldswick still because it's the closest place with a Booths!!!!
Still love Hebden Bridge after living in East Lancashire for over 30 years, we always take visitors when they're staying with us, and I don't know anyone who hasn't liked it Smile

Keith Leh (no F)

My Thum Royd (hard 'th' not soft)

Ludded Dun (I somehow miss out the first n)

Sorby Bridge (never sow like a pig, that's completely wrong)

Appletreewick I know is App Trick, but I always pronounce it Apple Tree Wick when talking about it (we camp there) Grin

x2boys · 04/04/2021 20:20

@TheOnlyMrsW you are probably aware that the BBC drama Juliet Bravo was filmed in and around Bacup ? And the old Bacup police station was used in the programme as " Hartley " police station the BBC presenters in the early 80,s used to struggle with the pronunciation and called it back up or Barcup 🤣

PickAChew · 04/04/2021 20:38

Places ending in -wick are funny ones. Up here in the North East, the w is silent - Alnwick (Annick) Fenwick and - one trip people up - Hawick.

Down my parents' way, in East Yorkshire, the w is pronounced (same as in Barnoldswick), so Withernwick, Elstronwick etc.

Hopefully, newsreaders have got the hang of Barnard Castle, by now!

Craftycorvid · 04/04/2021 20:42

My favourite is hearing Todmorden pronounced Tod-more-den with the emphasis on the ‘more’ Grin

DoingItMyself · 04/04/2021 20:52

My-th'm-roid.

L'd'n'dn foot

Definitely Sow (pig) for Sorby or Sohby.

S'therum. Nor-the-rum.

Ally-fax.

Udders-feeled.

Ow-dum.

Heard Bacup referred to as 'Back-up' on the news more than once.

TheOnlyMrsW · 04/04/2021 20:53

@x2boys we lived on the cobbled street just down from the police station......when we moved to the frozen north it was one of the ways my mum used to "sell" our new location to visiting family!!!
30-some years later I can't imagine living anywhere else!

Hoppinggreen · 04/04/2021 21:00

Sorry Doingitmyself although you have all the others right I have to insist on Sorby Bridge, I moved there aged 3 and stayed until I left for Uni at 18 , then bought my first flat there ages 25 and stayed for 5 years and nobody I knew said sow.
I now live around 30 minutes away in one of the other places you mention but have family and friends there and it’s definitely Sorby

Getting niche now, but what about Quernmore? Grin
Not sure how anyone can mangle Colne though?

Seriously? I went to Nelson & Colne college (and Burnley college) and it was always pronounced Coln.

denverRegina · 04/04/2021 23:26

@SusannaMorvern

Quernmore is Kwor mer

denverRegina · 04/04/2021 23:28

Colne is cown (not a cow sound)

denverRegina · 04/04/2021 23:29

And yes, it's Sorby to me

SusannaMorvern · 05/04/2021 01:22

*@SusannaMorvern

Quernmore is Kwor mer*

I say kwor ma, think that is probably my accent though. DD went to school there. I'm going to have to name change after this thread 🤦

Hoppinggreen · 05/04/2021 10:31

Coln

DoingItMyself · 05/04/2021 11:46

Cone.

Sorry Doingitmyself although you have all the others right I have to insist on Sorby Bridge

I shall say it properly in future, and test it out in Tesco.

DoingItMyself · 05/04/2021 11:48

The best one on the news was "Cluh-vell-ies". Cleveleys.
