How is 'Hebden Bridge' pronounced?

Hebden (with an H sound) or Ebden (silent H).

I say it's one way, DP the other Grin

I'm from Bury I pronounce it Berry, but many locals pronounce it Burray with a strong local accent .

BarbiesWorld · 04/04/2021 15:07

Slaithwaite is Slawit Grin love it when none locals pronounce it like its written.

denverRegina · 04/04/2021 15:08

"I'm doubting myself now Keighley,is pronounced Keith ley isn't it?"

No. No "th" sound. More of a soft "f"

Squeejit · 04/04/2021 15:09

Oswaldtwistle = Ozzy

denverRegina · 04/04/2021 15:10

Laneshaw Bridge?

SingingSands · 04/04/2021 15:12

What about Appletreewick?

BarbaraofSeville · 04/04/2021 15:21

Appletreewick is App Trick I think.

Mytholmroyd · 04/04/2021 15:32

How about Mytholmroyd though?! You called?

Slaithwaite isn't 'sl-ow!- it. It's Slaithwaite. Slay-thwaite.
No it is not - it's Slough-it - rhymes with plough as others have said. The announcer at Huddersfield railway station even says it like that

Golcar - no L pronounced.

Keighley is said with the tip of the tongue on the front of roof of the mouth - it is a th not a f but not emphasised - emphasis on the

Mytholmroyd · 04/04/2021 15:33

Sorry, missed the last bit - emphasis is on the Kee

Mytholmroyd · 04/04/2021 15:35

Sowerby is pronounced either Sour- by (name is of Viking origin for sour land) or So- erby by locals - I've used and heard both

denverRegina · 04/04/2021 15:37

No, it's definitely not a TH sound in Keighley.

GH is as in laugh, trough, clough. But softer than those due to the -ley

There's no t or th at all, in sound not in spelling.

Well, I have had over 50 years of correcting people on how to pronounce it when they mangle it because it is my last name so I will stick with my version thanks!Smile

It’s 100% a ‘th’ sound in Keighley. Grew up around there and still live close by.

"Slaithwaite isn't 'sl-ow!- it. It's Slaithwaite. Slay-thwaite.

No, it is Slough-it. Oswaldtwistle is Ossle twissel, or Ozzy, I grew up nearby. DH is from Keighley and it's Keith-li (li as in lip).
Bury I struggle with, I'd say Berry. Whalley is one people get wrong, wall-i not Wally.

Mytholmroyd · 04/04/2021 15:51

It's almost a click sound - bit difficult to describe or spell but the mouth is definitely in the th position (not f) but not a long soft th - you sort of swallow it Smile

Extremelyilluminated · 04/04/2021 15:54

Keighley is a th sound surely .
Keith- lee.

Bexily · 04/04/2021 15:55

H included for Hebden Bridge although locally many people drop their H's.
I have family in Sowerby Bridge and grew up in nearby Halifax. We've always said Sor-by Bridge.
Keighley - Keith-li

Nohomemadecandles · 04/04/2021 16:09

sandgrown · 04/04/2021 16:12

sandgrown · 04/04/2021 16:14

LittleMissnotLittleMrs · 04/04/2021 16:16
