How is 'Hebden Bridge' pronounced?

Hebden (with an H sound) or Ebden (silent H).

"Keith- lee."

No!

itstiktok · 04/04/2021 16:20

Keighley born and bred here and it's definitely a 'th' sound. You may hear it with an 'f' sound from a stronger accent though.

ScarletPower · 04/04/2021 16:20

Born and bred Yorkshire person here. It is my default setting to drop my H'aitches from everything but even I pronounce it Hebden

itstiktok · 04/04/2021 16:20

Also I laughed out loud at 'app-trick' for Appletreewick! Surely not?! Never heard it pronounced that way in my life!

Monkeytapper · 04/04/2021 16:24

I’m from Leeds and pronounce it Ebden

Nohomemadecandles · 04/04/2021 16:25

Lying in bed this beautiful day with a sick tummy and feeling weak. Don’t want to look at food. Could this be Covid ( no diarrhoea)?

Loopzy · 04/04/2021 16:32

My DC always used to call Barkisland 'Bark Island' and I still call it this now Grin

denverRegina · 04/04/2021 16:34

Not sure @Dora26 but how are you pronouncing Barnoldswick? Grin

ArsenicNLace · 04/04/2021 16:37

I remember watching a crime thing with Suranne Jones a number of years ago. She had taken on someone elses identity who had been brought up in West Yorkshire but was living in London. She was trying to ingratiate herself someone who had geninely been brought up in West Yorkshire.

However Suranne's character totally blew her cover by calling Sowerby Bridge 'Sower by Bridge' rather than 'sor by bridge' which no one who had genuinely been brought up in the area would do.

loobylou10 · 04/04/2021 16:48

Currently sat 5 miles outside Keighley and its most definitely Keith li.
(Or Cavetown if you're a born and bred local, which I am!!)

denverRegina · 04/04/2021 17:00

Or indeed K town.

I have friends called Keith and I 100% do not say their name when I say Keighley.

x2boys · 04/04/2021 17:05

Barnoldswick is Barlic ,isn't it ? Went once with an ex boyfriend 20 odd years ago ,that's what I was told!

BobbinThreadbare123 · 04/04/2021 17:10

Barnoldswick is Barlick.
What about Euxton near Chorley?
Some of my favourites are Gateacre and Aigburth in Liverpool. Confuses visitors no end! Grin

Hoppinggreen · 04/04/2021 17:23

Wikipedia evidence that Appletreewick is indeed pronounced App Trick

I've also learned that Staithes near Whitby is traditionally pronounced Steers.

Perhaps due to a lot of Viking influence around these parts. The language is not all based on English.

Sounds like Ap-trick is a local nickname. Similar to 'barlic.' Barnoldswick is pronounced as it's spelt but is mostly known as barlic locally.
PoTheDog · 04/04/2021 17:44

Colne is another one frequently mangled by non-lancs folk.

PoTheDog · 04/04/2021 17:45

And Lomeshaye too, I've heard some ridiculous versions of that!

denverRegina · 04/04/2021 17:49

"Barnoldswick is pronounced as it's spelt but is mostly known as barlic locally."

But with emphasis on the O

I remember watching an episode of Location, Location, Location set in Liverpool - Phil pronounced Gateacre as Gate Acre all the way through and none of the locals corrected him 🙈
BobbinThreadbare123 · 04/04/2021 19:07

@theteachesofpeaches haha how cringe for him Grin!
