Do creepy men hang out on Nextdoor app?

GeidiPrimes · 02/04/2021 21:50

I've posted a thread on ND asking for a recommendation for a mobile hairdresser and I've had 2 replies. One from someone with a womans name and profile photo, asking me for photos to "see if they can help", other one from a man asking me to PM him and he will give me the number.

Am I just being paranoid? I would never ask a woman to send me a photo, because, well, creepy men do it.

Creepy men hang out everywhere. But never seen anything specific on ND. Ignore the weirdos.

GeidiPrimes · 02/04/2021 21:59

I've never experienced weirdness on there before, but I usually post about hedgehogs or something. This just seemed a bit peculiar.

It's all lost cats and what's the best takeaway on ours. No creepy men so far.

Chocolatehabit · 02/04/2021 22:03

Mainly just old men writing poems about lockdown here....

Vinorosso74 · 02/04/2021 22:06

There's been videos of creepy "Peeping Toms" on ours recently. Before Christmas someone was banned after complaining about a woman breastfeeding her baby in a pub. He's now back....
My point is there's creeps wherever.

GrumpyHoonMain · 02/04/2021 22:07

I found this locally too. A few hair dressers, presumably because they were wary of the app, directed all queries through their husbands or sons until they realised it was killing business. If you feel uncomfortable just let them know - chances are they probably aren’t aware of how it all looks to an outsider.

DoubleHelix79 · 02/04/2021 22:07

It's mainly complaints about potholes/bonfires/dog mess, and various charity or or local activities here. Oh, and endless requests for recommended tradespeople. Haven't seen anything creepy.

Realitea · 02/04/2021 22:08

I have a bully on my local nextdoor. He puts racist stuff on there to me and I’ve noticed he puts strange replies on women’s posts too. I’ve reported him twice and every time he comes back to have a go at me. Only just learned the block button. I don’t like it

IdblowJonSnow · 02/04/2021 22:10

Yes they do.
Happened on our local one. A woman complained about it and all the men piled on and said get off the group if you don't want to be contacted. HmmAngry

Nice huh.

GeidiPrimes · 02/04/2021 22:11

I've never had a hairdresser ask me to send a photo of myself before. I haven't got unusual hair or anything.

Creepy men take every opportunity they can.

Ours is mostly stuff that's been nicked and the pub bore missing his pub so doing his best to get a rise out of everyone.

We have those too. One's a smarmy Jesus person who leaves passive-aggressive posts everywhere and another man who berates women for not cooking when they ask for takeaway recs.

That's bloody awful Idblo - but why am I not surprised Sad

The topic getting most traction on ND round here is fireworks. On bonfire night there were lots of complaints and links to petitions to ban them, including a ban on organised displays.
Also adverts for a fish and chip van and I have muted a local estate agent who is constantly giving his advice.
Funnily enough a bloke was complaining about not being able to get his haircut the other day .

GeidiPrimes · 02/04/2021 22:20

I wish women only communities were a thing. I'm so sick of questioning peoples motives all the time.

Yes. I received weird messages from a bloke just before Christmas asking how I was. He knew my name, dh's name, my kids' names. Knew what hobbies dh fies. Asked about DD's bf. I asked him 3x who he was and he didn't reply.

I reported him to the police, and they eventually said (after three months) that his messages didn't qualify as threatening enough so they couldn't investigate any more 🙄🙄🙄🙄

The problem with Nextdoor is the site asks everyone to register with their real name and address, BUT has no way of knowing if people aren't doing that. So they had no idea who this bloke was who was sending me messages.

So I'm left knowing that one of my neighbours, probably, has posted these messages but the police t it won't find out. It's shit.

So be careful of Nextdoir.

There are also a lot of white MC middle-aged racist, sexist men on iur site. I've had to block done

tenlittlecygnets · 02/04/2021 22:28

Posted too soon!

Hobbies dh does

I've had to block some

Never used this app.
Is it popular? What do you use it for?

StripedLeopard · 02/04/2021 22:33

Ours is mainly complaints about litter, lost pets, charity events etc. There's one weirdo who I've reported and blocked. Asking for a picture of your hair is definitely odd.

PickAChew · 02/04/2021 22:41

I'm always dismayed by the introductory posts "Hi, I'm Barbara and I have lived in Long Gushing for 43 years, currently at number 89a Pampas Avenue (front door is pink, my favourite colour) with my 3 children, Brendan, Gregory and Lambrusco and a sweet dog, actually my first pet, called Gonad. You might know my mother, her maiden name was McFish.

Used for local business recs. Unless you're a creepy man, then it's for meeting wahmen.

Fucking hell ten, stalking's a crime and old bill did nothing. What a surprise. That's really shit for you and I'm sorry.

I didn't think about that Grumpy, that it could be their male partner speaking for them. I find that quite unsettling too.

I once advertised an unused pack of nappies on next door as my son had grown faster than anticipated. I can confirm that creepy men definitely do hang about on there, some of the messages I received Envy

Spidey66 · 02/04/2021 22:50

I deleted it.

In my local group there was a guy there who spent his whole time trolling. He registered with about 30+ different IDs in the 9 months I was there , male and female with different personas, all to start rows and stir up trouble, often about dogs cos he hated them. He'd be banned but would come back the next day or so with a different name and persona. Sometimes he had. 2 or 3 on the go as sockpuppets ND for all their promises of verifying names and addresses and wanting to make communities great were pretty useless at sorting it out, so I put a load of negative reviews on TrustPilot and told them to shove their website where the sun didn't shine.

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 02/04/2021 23:36

Gonad the dog 😂

DianaT1969 · 02/04/2021 23:48

The trouble with NextDoor is that it has started publishing everyone's addresss. Down to the road name, block or 1-10 door numbers. It's a paradise for stalkers now. I used to recommend it on here. Never again.
